England announce home venues for World Cup qualifiers (28 July 2004)

England has selected Old Trafford and St James’ Park to be the venues for its home games during the team’s forth-coming 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign. Manchester United's 67,000-capacity Old Trafford Stadium will host four of the group six matches, while Newcastle United's 52,000-capacity St. James' Park Stadium will host just one.

England is due to play its first home game, against neighbouring Wales, at Old Trafford on October 9th later this year. Matches against Northern Ireland on March 26th and Austria on October 8th will follow in 2005, before England’s final home game, against Poland, just four days later on the 12th October.

St James' Park will provide the venue for the England v Azerbaijan game on March 30th next year, the team having played their recent internationals at various different grounds around the country, while the new Wembley continues to take shape prior to its scheduled opening in the spring of 2006.

Vienna in Austria, on September 4th, sees the start of England’s campaign to qualify for the next World Cup…
