Work is slow so I have time to kill these days - slowly becoming a second degree couch sloth. Can only take Springer for so long, so i'm into movies. For the next week, I am going to really apply my movie trade and rent a bunch. However, I am open to suggestions.

If you could nominate top movies (on video) in the following categories, it could help me with my "research"

1. Drama
2. Comedy
3. Action
4. 80's
5. Overall Wicked movie

I realize some may overlap categories, but so be it. I know that some people's selections may be cause for heated debate. However, if you really think 16 Candles was fantastic, then be prepared to stand up for yourself. Incidently I just saw Ocean's eleven and dang it was good.

Off the top of my head . . .

1. Drama: The Insider (Al Pacino, Russell Crowe; Michael Mann, director; 1999)
2. Comedy: Delicatessen, subtitled or dubbed (Dominique Pinon; Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director; 1991) or Slums of Beverly Hills (Alan Arkin, Marisa Tomei, Natasha Lyonne; Tamara Jenkins, director; 1998)
3. Action: The Professional (Jean Reno, Gary Oldman; Luc Besson, director; 1994) or The Replacement Killers (Chow Yun-Fat, Mira Sorvino; Antoine Fuqua, director; 1998)
4. 80's: Taps (George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton, Sean Penn, Tom Cruise; Harold Becker, director; 1981)
5. Overall Wicked movie: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy; Stanley Kramer, director; 1967)

One more thing: if the Mrs. wants to watch too, pick up Beautiful Girls (Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, Timothy Hutton, Natalie Portman, Rosie O'Donnell; Ted Demme, director; 1996).

That should do you for a couple of days. :)

Ocean's 11: best movie and best soundtrack of 2001. Period.

If you're wanting to make the missus think you got something for her and inturn put her to sleep so you can watch what you want pick up Gosford Park. Trust me on this one.

Lord of the ZRings is always a good watch. I'm surprised Keeper left that out. I thought he was into goblin.... I meant Goblin's. ;)

The Royal Tenenbaums is good. Some very funny stuff, but loooong.

I really expected a bit more from The Royal Tenenbaums -- it wasn't bad per se, but the previews and the cast suggested it would be funnier than it actually was. On the other hand, if you looking for another good flick from the Wilson brothers (Luke and Owen), rent Bottle Rocket with James Caan. Two thumbs and an unloaded-gun-with-the-safety-on up.

Worst Ever

How did Gosford Park win awards? Putting that one down on my WORST EVER LIST.
This would also be followed quite closely by Summer of Sam, in which I laughed out loud in the theater when the dog starts talking. Damn that was a bad movie.
Final candidate for WORST EVER can go to "Amazon Women on the Moon". So bad is this, that you do actually have to see it, for you are left to question - "someone actually created this?"

Any other takers?

on a brighter note...

On a good note, cannot overlook "Pulp Fiction" or "Reservoir Dogs", as Tarrentino dialogue is classic and unmatched.

For one to include the missus, I got free passes to see "Serving Sara" (as I cannot justify spending full fare to see a move...and i'm cheap). If you like Chandler Bing, then it is worthwhile.

80's - must include "Vacation"
As well, for 80's - must include "Splash" for it was the first time I got to see a boobie on the big screen.
;)

Not True

That is absolutely not true about SLAPSHOT!!!!

It fits all of the above categories.

It's Action, Drama, Comedy, and Classic all rolled into one.

Good Call John. Don't know how that slipped my mind.
