Clint Eastwood’s latest movie is about an aging boxing trainer (played by Clint Eastwood himself) who takes a determined but inexperienced, 32-year old “girlie” (Maggie, played by Hillary Swank) under his wing. The movie builds beyond the standard sports-based film to a dramatic climax where Frankie has to make the most difficult of decisions in regards to Maggie and her safety. Meanwhile, the movie is narrated by Frankie’s friend, Eddie (played by Morgan Freeman), sparking memories of 1994's Shawshank Redemption.
It's difficult to imagine that this is Eastwood's 27th film as a director -- we almost entirely think of him as an actor. But as time passes -- film after film -- Clint demonstrates that his film making abilities have eclipsed anything he has done in front of the camera. That's not to say, however, that his acting talents have diminished. Hardly: Eastwood shows a gruff tenderness in Million Dollar Baby that just may prove to be worth an Oscar. Likewise, both Hillary Swank and Morgan Freeman are also nominated for Oscars (best leading actress and best supporting actor) as are the editing, screenplay, and picture itself. Rightfully so.
