When you think back to what Michael Mann has done before -- Heat, Collateral, and The Last of the Mohicans -- its not a stretch to expect good things in Miami Vice. Well, he certainly does deliver.

Mann is the unofficial king of night shooting and shootouts -- and when you put them together it makes for a great movie-based-on-a-tv-show. Fast cars, faster boats, guns, drugs, money, and a cool soundtrack make for another Michael Mann classic.

Colin Farrell & Jamie Foxx play Crocket & Tubbs, although in the film they go by their first names, Sonny & Rico instead. The only real homage to the original show is the closing credit music -- a cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight". Beyond that and the t-shirt under suit fashion sense, there's little else that connects the movie to the 80's.

Michael Mann fans won't be at all disappointed.

So in other words it's another vacuous Hollywood exercise with pretty photography and eye-searing pastel and neon colours filling in for dialogue and a script that makes any sense?

Do we get at least a cameo from Edward James Olmos (love the triple-barrelled name for a 3rd rate actor) staring moodily at the camera before mumbling "bring him in?" How about Elvis the gator?

Hopefully Michael Mann only dealt with the photography, and somebody with half a clue wrote the script and dialogue. The original was an absolute farce, unless you were taking the brown acid or were in grade 7 and just impressed by all the fancy colours....
