Sounds like a done deal with Adidas and Apple helping with monetary incentives as well as MLS giving him rights to a future expansion franchise (see David Beckham).

Projected first match July 21st in Leagues Cup action.

Now just need to find him a coach as Inter Miami just canned Phil Neville last week.

More like turf management...

Whitecaps don't play Miami this season - presumably that means they will play next season either in Miami or here?

No idea how MLS handles their ridiculous unbalanced schedule. Almost as if they should consider some type of concept where they split into two divisions with the teams that are performing best in let's call it the "Premier" division and then the other teams playing in a "Championship" division.

And then at the end of the season the teams that did the best in this lower division would move up to the top division and the teams performing worst in the top division would drop down and have to earn their way back up.

Has anything like that ever been suggested?

Yes.

And then San Diego paid $500M to current owners and they all had a good laugh at the suggestion.

You're correct. Effing turf.

Pele was 35 when he made the move to NY... same age as Messi now.

Question: What is bigger in terms of a shock to their respective sport - Messi to Miami or Gretzky to LA (note Gretzky was in his prime at the age of 27)?

The Gretzky trade was a massive shock. I still remember it to this day watching it on the news as a kid.

That changed the course of the NHL forever. No one ever thought he would get traded in his prime.

The shock it sent around the NHL and as well as the anger many Canadians had and the impact on the NHL can never be measured.

Gretzky going in his prime is a factor.

The reality is that Messi is on the back nine big time. He'll play what's left of this season and maybe one more? With maybe a loan to Barca mixed in?

It's good for MLS for sure. But is it what Gretzky to LA in his prime was for the NHL? Probably not.

There is a real argument that the NHL is not a viable business today without that trade...
