I am currently in midst of running my Polar into the grave. Think I bought it in 2009. The screen has completely crapped out. Dead. All good, I have cheater numbers I can hit on it, i.e: 1 MPH, 2 MPH, etc all the way to like 15 MPH. Same w/ the grade, so I can punch the cheater number, and make micro adjustments on a 0.1 level if needed. But, the day the rest of this thing dies, I'm definitely looking for a smart trainer that can interact with ZWIFT or other training platforms.

Ran a hard interval session on it this morning before coming in. I've plugged in the Fort Langley 1/2 in February, and would like to put in something under 1:40. That goal seems like a million miles away right now.....

I ran like 9K, a couple laps around the block, while my kid practiced, and listened to an old playlist on my Tom Tom watch through my Skullcandy headphones. Same same

9K is a good run, whachotalkinbout?

When I say "a million miles away", I really mean it. It I were to go this Sunday out and put in my best current time for a 1/2, I'd struggle to break 1:50, and I think I'm in very good shape right now. That's just me being old, and never a good natural runner. I hate thinking back to my late teens, where 1:20 was a pretty decent effort, and 1:25 was a given. But, most of us here were likely about that level.

That said, baring injury, I'm really confident my current plan will get me to sub 1:40.

I was just giving you a hard time about the detail in your post. I think my per km speed is about 5 1/2min/km. Feel like it’s slow but I don’t run on regular schedule and these days with rain not much at all. I guess that puts me at the 1:50ish mark. I’m not a regular runner either, although trying to get more regular, but I’m also not one to fork over the money for a treadmill. I kinda go in spurt’s with it.
Just trying to keep the cardio up and weight down is all.

Although I grabbed a Garmin watch at almost 1/2 price so I can download some Spotify music to it angle change up the playlist. :)

It's snow season. Shouldn't you be shredding the gnar?

I think 5.5 is pretty good for old fcuk like us. I need about 30 minutes of warm up before I can push under 6. Then 5-5.5 becomes way more comfortable. But think about that, I need to run 5 KM just to work out the kinks!

Im trying to avoid getting to that point of having to warm up for a chunk of the actual run, but also i feel like if I were to get into the 15-20k area my time would slowly increase to the 6+ range. Need to work on my stamina to get into longer runs.

That’s what she said

I would like to eventually do a 10k run/race at some point

Yeah, for me that 30 minutes is 100% necessary. Or, hit the bike for 20-30 then all feels loose and good. That’s footy….fcuking wrecked the body. But all good. My best run recently was 30 minutes directly after a hard 90 minute ride. Meant to be exactly that, hard, build up lactic acid, but the run felt like 5 / km was easy.

Anyways....key takeaway points are:
  1. When you are young, you can run fast, and do it without too much specific training.
  2. When you are old, getting "fast" again is a fool's game. "Fast" is the old "Slow". I am a fool.
  3. Running sucks.
  4. Getting old sucks.

Treadmill Day 365

So finished the 10K part 2 series yesterday, woke up this morning and thought, let's take a shot at a sub 30 minute 5K.

Warmed up for 5 minutes at a 5MPH pace to get the blood flowing and then started. A little bit choked I fell short but looking back, pretty proud of myself in getting to this point after 1 solid year of making changes...

Did first 1/2 mile at a 6, then 6.1 for the next 1/2, 6.2 to get to 1.5 miles in and then 6.3 to the end (kicked it up to 6.5 at 3 mile mark and then 6.8 for last 15 seconds or so. Mentally one of the hardest runs I have done as I was ready to dial it back big time with a little over 1/2 miles to go.

Onwards and Upwards.

My 2021 Treadmill Stats

Miles Ran: 585
Elevation Climbed: 55, 397 Feet
Calories Burned: 95,151

Not bad, think I'll let myself go, pack on 50LBs and see if I can do a PB in 2023.
