Group of Death

Tough Group but WC Favourites Argentina should take it, along with England going thru. Nigeria always tough but not this time.

Tough call

Group of death to say the least... Argentina will win the group (even after England beat them)... England will scrape through tying Nigeria and losing to Sweden!!! Does anyone out there remember the last time England beat Sweden???

Definately the group of death here but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that England will win this group, even though it may come down to a tie breaker.

Any combination of the four teams could make it through. I'd say that Sweden is the weakest of the bunch though not by much. The most talented team is easily Argentina with Nigeria close behind. England is a little over-rated as easily can be seen by reading any of the sports web sites on the internet. England still have some capable players and an excellent manager to get them through though as can be seen by their recent games against Albania, Greece, Holland and Sweden, they can show their true colours.

My WC Pool Pick will be:

1. Nigeria
2. Argentina

Swedish Touch

They are the dark horse in the death group, but I think they have as good a chance as any of the four teams.
It is because they are not high profile like the other teams, but they allways get good results on the world stage.

I need to get the latest WC 2002 Swedish Kit for next year.

Mabey Zenga can put in a good word at NA Sports for me.

England announces full World Cup squad:

Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), James (West Ham), Ferdinand (Leeds), Campbell (Arsenal), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Mills (Leeds), Brown (Man Utd), Keown (Arsenal), Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Dyer (Newcastle), Butt (Man Utd), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Joe Cole (West Ham), Owen (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Vassell (Aston Villa), Fowler (Leeds), Sheringham (Tottenham).

On standby: Murphy (Liverpool).

No Steve McMannaman, Andy Cole, Phil Neville, Matt Jansen, Ugo Ehiogu, Frank Lampard or Trevor Sinclair. Interesting picks, to say the least.

Very young squad with the inclusions of Joe Cole, Vassell, Hargreaves, Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge and Gerrard - they could all qualify as U-21 Internationals.

Lion's Gate Hospital...

I wonder if Hargreaves has any regrets about turning his back on his home and native land? He must've done a considerable amount of soul-searching on that one.

I had read somewhere that Hargreaves is now only the 5th player selected for England while playing for a foreign club. Other four included Chris Sutton, Trevor Sinclair (I think), and some other limey poofters that no one cares about.

McMannaman was selected while playing for Real. I'm not so sure about the other poofters.

poofters

I believe that poofter Liniker was selected while playing for Barcelona??? Then again Trevor Francias was with Sampdoria when he was playing for the limey's... Oh and Chris Woods (GK), Terry Butcher and Gazza all played for the Gers while representing the United States!!! (Wait a minute, yeh the States);)

Many other poofters that played abroad, I just can't think of them right now...

Gerrard out

England dealt blow as Gerrard ruled out of FIFA World Cup

LONDON, May 14 (AFP) - England's World Cup plans were further hit Tuesday with the news that midfielder Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of the trip to the Far East because of a groin injury.
The Liverpool player, a key part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's plans, had hoped to shrug off the injury in time to join the England squad on a pre-tournament get-together in Dubai, but admitted that his dream of playing in Korea and Japan would not be fulfilled.

Gerrard visited a specialist Monday and scans confirmed the 21-year-old will need surgery, which he will undergo later this week.

"The rehabilitation period for this sort of operation is six weeks, so obviously I'm going to miss the World Cup which is a massive disappointment," said Gerrard.

"However, I need to get myself right as I wouldn't have been able to do myself or the team justice in Japan. In the short term it's a big blow, but I'm only 21 and confident this surgery means I'll be involved in other major tournaments for the National side in the future.

"I want to send all the England lads my best wishes for the tournament and let them know I'll be cheering them on from home. My priority now has to be to get myself fit for the start of next season with Liverpool."

He is expected to be fit to join his fellow Liverpool team-mates when they report for pre-season training in the second week of July.

Gerrard will be replaced in the England squad by Liverpool team-mate Danny Murphy.

The news will be a blow for the England team who have never lost an international match in the ten played with Gerrard, and in light of the injury worries of Kieron Dyer and David Beckham.

The news was more encouraging for Dyer with the midfielder's knee injury rapidly improving and the Newcastle star has been given until the end of the week to prove his fitness.

England captain Beckham is also confident of being fit for the start of the tournament.

Liverpool striker Michael Owen will captain England in their World Cup warm-up friendly match against South Korea on Tuesday.

"It's a fantastic feeling being captain," Owen told reporters at a news conference on Monday. "I thought it would only be for one game."

"Obviously with David making good progress but not being involved in tomorrow's game then obviously it was down to the manager to look for a replacement."

Owen will captain the side for the second time. He led the team in England's 4-0 victory over Paraguay in a friendly on his home pitch of Anfield last month.

However England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said on Sunday that the prognosis for Beckham's return for England's opening Group F game against Sweden in Saitama on June 2 was "very positive".

England meet World Cup favourites Argentina on June 7 before playing Nigeria in their final group game on June 12.
Engalnd should blow through South Korea (3-0), but I'm betting they don't make it out of group F. Argentina and Nigeria..

Unrucky....

balls.........

The words woeful and average flatter England's non-performance today. How can you let the S. Koreans score from a corner? They can barely see above the counters in their cornershops for fcuk's sake. Trevor Sinclair has no business wearing an England shirt and would probably struggle to make the Canadian side he's that shite. Hargreaves looked tidy but lacking in any kind of vision or creativity though he did deliver some crunching tackles that would probably have left Gary Neville, Goldenballs, and Kieran Dyer in comas. Emile Heskey is a big donkey in the mold of the washed up old beasts that traipse up and down Blackpool pleasure beach except not half as skilled.

On the strength of today's performance England will be home on the 8th of June. Cnuts.

At least then the Scots would have some opposition instead of the Hong Kong XI they're due to play against tomorrow. Another loss for Vogts then.

Match run down

Korea proved they could live with the best while England hinted they would struggle without key players at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ after a 1-1 draw at the Seogwipo stadium in Korea.
A first-half goal by England captain Michael Owen was cancelled out by Ji-Sung Park seven minutes after the break as both sides searched for a morale-boosting victory with just 10 days to go before the tournament opener.

Despite the home side’s 4-1 thrashing of Scotland five days earlier, England controlled the first-half and went ahead after 26 minutes (0-1). A neat pass by Emile Heskey opened up a square Korean defence and though Paul Scholes’ shot was blocked by Keeper Woon-Jae Lee, Owen scrambled in the rebound.

It was a different game after the break with Guus Hiddink’s men equalising within seven minutes of the restart. A corner from the right was flicked on by Jin-Cheul Choi to Ji-Sung Park who left England’s substitute goalkeeper David James with no chance (1-1 ‘52). Urged on by a capacity crowd of over 42,000 in the southern island of Jeju, Korea could not quite force a winner. England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who made a number of changes in the match, will be praying David Beckham will be ready for their opener, while Hiddink will be confident of a good showing for the co-hosts.
Fastshow who started for England? I sure hope England doesn't rest it World Cup dreams on the Return of Beckam.

first XI

Stephen Ericksson started with, what the pundits believe, will be his starting side against the Swedes apart from the obvious exception of Goldenballs who should be in the side, Mohican and wobbly foot permitting. Quite why you couldn't have looked this up for yourself is anyone's guess but, if memory serves, here it is; Martyn, Campbell, Ferdinand, A. Cole, Danny Mills, Scholes, Hargreaves, Vassell, Owen, Heskey, and Danny Murphy.

Please update your wallcharts accordingly.

While "talking" to you is some what difficult for me at times with my brain and dictionary taking quite the beating, it is still nicer than chatting to myself.

Thanks for the run down non the less.
