I was actually thinking about getting some games under my belt for Surrey United and Langley as well just to help keep the goal tally healthy.

They are both premier teams in the premier division therefor I should be able to suit up for both, just like tigers A and FCT are both playing premier and sharing players, although they are the same club which makes it different? Oh wait, no you can’t have 2 teams from the same club compete in the premier division according to league bylaws. So wait, how can teams that aren’t the same club share players… while also playing in the same division?

God damnit, make it all make sense for fcuk sakes. The league started going downhill when dude moved uphill. There, I said it okay.
I have the answer.

We move Abby to Whistler.

Buy a VMSL Premier Spot next year.

Cram the squad into my wine room, I’m sure we can accommodate 9 bunk beds.

Home matches at Chekamus Turf, après-match at Buffalo Bills, we’ll own the back bar. @YoAdrian will be thrown out to the gaggle of Aussie cougars as their chew toy.

Win.

Repeat.

What can go wrong? Next stop, Provincial Cup finals and one two-foot tackle by the smallest kid in town. Can’t wait.

The winter weather has pushed the season back another week, but things seem set to resume this weekend. That said, the FVSL's top flight already has plenty of games to make up and with the mid-season addition of mid-week games against Trinity Western and Douglas College, aka Surrey FC, fixture congestion looks as though it will be the theme of the rest of the schedule. These extra games could stretch some rosters thin and we shall see who has the depth to get the job over the line. The league appears to have designs on some grand plans moving forward, but while those dreams may eventually be realized, they are very much in their infancy at present. This has led to some decisions pertaining to teams in the top division that no doubt the league would have preferred to avoid. Nevertheless, here we are, with all eyes once more cast towards how this field will fair come Provincial Cup season.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Mid-season Review

1. Vancouver Tigers FC
It is all going according to plan for FC Tigers after their tumultuous, and rather boisterous, exit from the VMSL. Tigers are cruising and are almost out of site at the top with half the schedule still to be played. Yes, Abbotsford has a boat load of games in hand, but Abby would need to win all of them plus the two remaining head to head clashes with Tigers in order to overtake them. One of those remaining head to heads is slated for this first week back in the New Year, so Tigers can more or less put one hand on the trophy with a win this week. Tigers are into the SC Cup final and will surely have designs on making it a clean sweep when Pakenham Cup play begins next month. Leading scorer Farivar Torabi continues to scorch all those who would stand between him and the goal, but while he rightly grabs the headlines, he is surrounded by a cast of top talents most of whom either have dreams of playing at the highest level or those who have taken their shot but now returned. Of course, the real test, and the true goal for Tigers, remains the Provincial Cup. The question will be, if Tigers can more or less wrap up the title in January, that would leave them essentially playing an exhibition schedule the rest of the way. Will this have them ready to go against battle hardened teams from the VMSL and VISL come April? Historically, the answer there has been "no", but Tigers have plenty invested in this season, in every sense of the term, and both they and the FVSL itself will be hoping to buck that trend.

Pre-season Prediction - 1
Mid-season Prediction - 1

2. Vancouver Whitecaps U-19
One of the many intriguing unknowns coming into the season for the FVSL is what, exactly, would the addition of this young Whitecaps group add to the top flight. Certainly the brand has been a strong boost to the league and likely serves as a sales pitch to some of the other academy or development sides playing in the Premier Division as they get to offer prospective players, and their parents shelling out the cash, the opportunity to play against the Whitecaps and maybe, just maybe, get scooped up and started on the road to glory. As for the product on the field, the team has seemingly found their footing. They were always going to be well drilled and have a high soccer IQ, but the question was would the age difference play a major factor? It would appear as though the kids have come to grips with the challenges of men's football and have risen up to second in the table with some impressive results along the way. They have also booked a place in the SC Cup final after an impressive win away to Abbotsford in the semis. Chris Album and Jay Herdman are a couple of the key contributors for the U19s and might be worth keeping an eye on for the future. The the Caps restructuring their development teams with new leagues to play in during the summer, you have to think that perhaps the Provincial Cup is not on the radar for the Whitecaps. Additionally, they have not entered the Pakenham Cup, so perhaps that signals their intent the rest of the way is simply to play out their stretch of league matches and then turn their attention elsewhere. It is shaping up to be a good battle between the 'Caps and Abby for second place but, given the sheer number of games for Abbotsford between now and the end of the season, and with the league arranging for Whitecaps to play all their remaining matches at home, I think the edge goes to the kids.

Pre-season Prediction - 2
Mid-season Prediction - 2

3. FC Faly Academy
I pegged FC Faly to be the best of the new, young academy sides, outside the Whitecaps, joining the FVSL and spearheading this new direction for the league and, indeed, they appear to have lived up to the expectation. This group had some experience playing men's league prior to making the move to the Valley and that little bit extra appears to have helped separate them from their contemporaries. Furthermore, they have snagged the illustrious honour of being the only side to defeat the vaunted FC Tigers to this point of the season. Anastazi Nahayo is the man leading the way for Faly as they look set to likely book a spot in the Provincial A Cup which would be a boon for the program and likely provide some vindication to the league in giving this group direct entry into the top flight. How they will fair in that competition against some of the Province's biggest and most well established remains to be seen, but it will no doubt be a great learning experience for a program that has also landed a BC League 1 spot under the "Altitude FC" moniker. As for the rest of the FVSL season, you have to think Faly will be caught up by Abbotsford given the quality Abby have and their number of games in hand, but it sets up as a good scrap after that between Faly and Langley, as well as perhaps Surrey if they can recapture the form they had to begin the year.

Pre-season Prediction - 5
Mid-season Prediction - 4

4. Abbotsford United
To say that it has been a frustrating season for the defending FVSL and reigning Pakenham Cup champions would be an understatement. It was always set to be a stiff examination of their championship credentials this season with powerhouse Tigers joining the league but, after a strong start, United have faltered. Their ability to generate momentum has be greatly hampered by, first, the catastrophic flooding suffered by much of the Eastern Fraser Valley, and then, by this recent stretch of snow. The result is that Abbotsford now hold three to five games in hand over the field and will likely be playing twice a week pretty much the rest of the way through March. Additionally, they have only played three matches since the first week of November, losing them all. The first was a crucial clash with Tigers that saw Abby first slip from the top of the standings. They were then beaten twice by the Whitecaps, once out at UBC in the league, and then again just before the holidays at Mouat to drop out of the SC Cup. The result is a 16 point gap between Abbotsford and Tiger that will narrow to four points if Abby can will their four matches in hand. Of course they still have a pair of clashes to come with Tigers, but the first of those is set for this weekend, after yet another long layoff for Abby while the rumour was that Tigers had an exhibition match with Calgary Foothills to stay sharp. Despite the minimal amount of games played, Connor Hildebrant has still wracked up ten goals this season and is in the thick of the Golden Boot race. That might be the only silverware Abbotsford can seriously contend for this season, though, as the league will be an uphill battle at this point.

Pre-season Prediction - 3
Mid-season Prediction - 3

5. Langley United
The project Langley rebuild is now in full swing after a very slow start this season. Former Pegasus man Azad Palani is now firmly in charge at LFC, with the veteran old guard having moved on. In addition to running the adult side of the club, Azad often calls his own number and slots into the line up, having netted five goals for the first team this season. His young group of up-and-comers is paired with veteran FVSL leadership in the form of striker John Craig and defender Steve Gaffney. The talisman, though, is captain Scott Barling who is having another standout season. Have begun the season by being promptly bounced out of the SC Cup and then rooted to the foot of the table after five losses through their fist six games, Langley have surged back into the top half of the table and are in the thick of it to qualify for the Provincial Cup. With Whitecaps potentially not entering the Provincials, perhaps it will be an easier path to the post-season competition for Langley than it appears, but qualification will surely be the target. It looks set to be a fun battle between Langley and old rivals Surrey United, along with upstarts FC Faly to see how the top five shake out.

Pre-season Prediction - 4
Mid-season Prediction- 5

6. Surrey United
At the beginning of the season it looked as though Surrey United's off-season merger with, and amalgamation of, Red Bulls was a master stroke. Surrey came flying out of the traps, going undefeated through the group stages of the SC Cup and booking a spot in the semi finals of that competition. They then backed that up with a strong start to the season, winning three of four games to begin the campaign. Since then, however, it has been a mightily rocky road for the Cloverdale crew, winning just once. That has seen them slip down the table and out of the Provincial Cup picture, at least for the moment. Word out of CAP is that injuries have played a massive part in Surrey's recent struggles and they will no doubt be hoping that an extended winter break can provide a platform for a healthy stretch run. While United have got contributions from all over, they are perhaps lacking any clear cut star power or true veteran FVSL experience. Surrey stalwart Raq Amijee has not had his usual impact on the group so far this season and Red Bulls maverick Emmanuel Ekeh has chipped in with five goals, but only two of them have come in league play. Their leading scorer, Aryan Chauhan has netted six time in all competitions, but everything about Surrey since that hot start has just been rather underwhelming. They look a team in desperate need of a player or two to grab the squad by the scruff of the neck and drag them to a greasy victory or two. If they can find their way to coming out on the right end of one or two gutsy performances, they may well find themselves back in the Provincial Cup places. Of course, they may also get lucky and have a spot trickle down to them if Whitecaps do take a pass, but, no doubt this side would rather get there on merit as opposed to simply making up the numbers.

Pre-season Prediction - 6
Mid-season Prediction - 6

7. Micro Footie Academy
Fair play to Micro Footie this season as they have certainly done their level best to trade punches with some fairly well-established men's league sides in their first year in the FVSL Premier Division. There is no doubt that they are sitting where they are sitting in the table based on merit, but a goal or two here or there and they could have maybe three to six more points and be right in the thick of the Provincial Cup race. Still, there has probably been just about enough to say that this group can hold their own at this level, certainly at least as well as some of the teams they replaced in the division. Their highlight of the season so far is surely a stunning win over Abbotsford, handing United their first loss of the season at the time. There have been plenty of growing pains along the way, and MFA have certainly shown some immaturity and naiveite at times, which has cost them in the results column. There have been bright spots, though. While he is certainly not one of the young "academy age" players, striker Mawuena Mallet is quite obviously a Premier calibre player and if MFA can get another one or two like him through the door to compliment their youngsters while they learn and grow at this level, Micro Footie could well find themselves competing for bigger prizes in the future.

8. FCT (Premier) Academy
Much has been written of the travails of Premier Academy, come FCT Academy, and the journey with which it has undergone to finally sit where it does today. Given the chance to do things over again, would the league act differently? You would like to think so. That said, they played the cards they were dealt and this one was a losing hand. After all was said and done, FCT Academy will ostensibly play out the string in what amounts to an exhibition schedule as the "B Team" for FC Tigers. That, of course, is based on the assumption that surely there is no way the league could possibly allow them to qualify for the Provincial Cup. One supposes that will remain to be seen. In the meantime, FCT have been putting in better and better performances as the players are no doubt keen to catch the eye of the A Team brass. It is probably a safe bet to see them picking up a few points during the back half of the season and climbing the table a bit.

Pre-season Prediction - 8
Mid-season Prediction - 7

9. Trinity Western University Spartans
One of two mid season additions to the FVSL Premier Division, TWU are playing every team in the league once in a game that counts for points in the standings. The games are mid-week and that might get a bit tricky now with all the fixtures needing to be rearranged from the snow, although TWU only have five matches left. There was some talk of Trinity potentially joining for a full season next Fall, given the success programs such as UBC have had with that tactic in the VMSL, but, while certainly not off the table, talks do seem to have cooled on that front. Their "B Team" is a top side in FVSL Division 1, so likely there could be a way to survive the early months during the college season before fielding a stronger side from November onward. Of course, TWU are another that have their eyes focused on BC League 1 as "Unity FC", so that will likely factor large in whatever plans they are making for their program. Five matches left to play means that Trinity could max out on 22 points, which one would doubt would be enough to lift them into a Provincial Cup place. That said, like the Whitecaps, TWU have also not entered the Pakenham Cup, so likely that signals that they are not interested in making a run at Provincials.

Pre-season Prediction - N/A
Mid-season Prediction - N/A

10. Surrey FC Royals
The Douglas College boys are another of the recent post-secondary sides to determine it would be valuable to have some way for their program to continue throughout the year, beyond simply November. Royals have followed TWU's lead and joined the FVSL for a mid-week tour of the top flight. Unlike TWU, though, Surrey FC look sent on taking their swing at reaching the Provincials, as they have entered the Pakenham Cup. Like TWU, they would cap out at 22 points if they win out the remaining fixtures on their schedule, and that seems unlikely; both to occur, but also to be enough to qualify them for BCs. So it is Pakenham or bust for the college boys this season! The wider ranging ripple effect of SFC joining the FVSL is perhaps yet to be felt, though. SFC have traditionally been affiliated with Pegasus in the VMSL and Peg have often received an influx of Douglas players after the end of the college season. If this shift to the FVSL is permanent for the program, and rumours suggest that it is and that the Royals will be full time in the FVSL next season, then what effect that may have on a Peg program that is treading water at the top level of the VMSL currently and may well get dragged under will be fascinating to watch.

Mid-season Prediction - N/A

Just received confirmation that the high and mighty whitecaps have informed the fvsl of their desire to no longer play away games for the rest of the season and all scheduled games involving the caps are to be played at their home pitch AT UBC and the league has honoured and accepted this request.

Abbotsford was originally supposed to start the season back up at home to langley this weekend however due to the tigers having a exhibition game against Calgary foothills the league has decided to reschedule this weekends games to avoid conflict with the tigers EXHIBITION GAME.

Enough is enough, time to drop a line to BC Soccer and have this fcukery looked into. Either that or give us our fcuking league fees back cause The other 90% of the league that isn’t tigers or vwfc is sick of funding this BS.

I have no problem facing adversity as is such in life, but playing against a fcuking loaded gun this OBVIOUS is a bit much.

I guarantee no other league in the world from Sunday league to the top tier has a single team that they allow to only play home games. What a crock o shite.

OK, back to reality here.

Actually WTF?

How is this even a consideration? Firstly, what good does it do for developing players? Not only making it easier for them, but now the club is fostering an environment of entitlement, which is what they've been accused of for some time, that the kids graduating out of academy show up to other clubs thinking their shite doesn't stink.

Secondly, what is this leadership thinking? It's such a desperate move to allow this, to allow the shenanigans of one club with two teams in Premier sharing players, how can they feel they are a legitimate league? This is NOT professionalism, it's beyond amateurish.

Again, another team with no future and no past for this league having the powers that be bent over and take it in the ass.
Not worth even having them in the league at this point. Which is what most teams felt at the beginning anyway.
Not surprised if this pushes a team or 2 from playing in this league.

It 100% should.

I may be an outlier in this opinion, but if I were managing either one of Langley, Abby, or Surrey, I'd be working the phones in the VMSL, finding a way to make the move. Even if that means a lateral move into Div. 1.

Surely any goals scored for FCT would be listed under a separate line?

Ie all the players on the list are listed next to their teams. So theoretically, in your scenario, a player could appear twice on the list, but those totals would be separated, not added together.

...

If I had to guess, I would venture the player to be Huty Mohiddin. He left Inter's Prem team to join Tigers and already has goals for both Tigers A and FCT Academy.

Incorrect. The player you mentioned scored the 5 goals combined between the 2 teams, and is on the top scorers list once, with 5 goals attributed to him.

Got a note- different birdy- that WFC has apparently been granted permission to play ALL their remaining games at home? So, of all the places in the Lower Mainland, UBC is the shittiest location if you are in the FVSL.

Can anyone confirm this? True? If so, WTF?

See above.

Or just check the schedule on the Mediocre Site...

My understanding is that this is not some last minute pivot. League told teams back in Oct/Nov that game #3 against WFC U19 would all be at UBC for all.

If that were the case (and that’s a big IF) why would any self-respecting team with a serious chance at a provincial spot agree to that, especially the teams that are ACTUALLY based out of the Valley? OK, Caps may not be able to qualify, but why would any other team with a chance at a Provincial spot give up home field advantage in the crucial games towards the end of a season?

And, to my knowledge, players weren’t involved in the discussion, whatsoever. I mean, that’s not a shock, given the league we’re dealing with here, but I’m aware of at least one team that was completely blindsided by this.

The fishbowl that is the FVSL just keeps getting fishier and fishier

Tongue in cheek...

I've actually heard the league negotiated to simply hand the Caps the Pakenham Cup trophy in lieu of having a competition. This was, of course, pre-negotiated when they came in, and all teams were made aware.

I didn't actually hear this, but I would not be surprised if true at this point.

Yes LOL. And similarly, the league would henceforth be known as “The Vancouver Whitecaps Fraser Valley Premier League”

Just leave the league mate. If the likes of Abby, Surrey, Langley all bounce there's no-one left. Whitecaps will be in BC League 1 next season anyways, so that leaves Los Tigres who can play against themselves, or play with themselves. Whichever they find more appealing.

14 games played and 9 of them zero points?!?!?! Nevermind jumping to the VMSL, perhaps AMSL more their speed.
