What are your predictions for the 2 remaining matches against Vancouver

Last time we played them it was 4-2 us. They were missing some players including their goalie. But since then they have signed 2 quality players who have made their team stronger. One of them being a central midfielder. That 4-2 game we were missing 3 out of 4 defenders including Ernesto. Gagan was also injured and only played half the game. We have signed a few players since then as well. So both teams have improved equally. So I will go for the exact same margin of victory for us. 3-1. we have 2 more players coming in this week so hopefully that will give us a boost. In the second game against them they will have given up by then so the floodgates will open up. It's awesome that we get to play Langley twice before our cup encounter. We aim to make a Cinderella cup run and go to provincials.

From the Media Desk of the Fraser Valley Soccer League…

There will officially be a new champion in the Umbro Premier League this season. Port Moody’s draw this past weekend has left first place out of reach, ending their title defense with three games left to play. Supplanting them at the top will be either last season’s Pakenham Cup champions Abbotsford or Coastal, who had been the previous holders of the UPL title prior to Port Moody. Elsewhere, the battles against relegation and for Provincial Cup qualification rage on as teams inch closed to the season’s end.

Here’s a recap of all of this week’s action:

SAFC Red Bulls 1-1 Port Moody Gunners – Friday 8:45pm; Cloverdale Athletic Park #1

With the season approaching a climax, Port Moody and SAFC clashed with both teams desperate for points for two very different reasons. The Gunners were looking to keeping their title defense alive while Red Bulls were trying to pull clear of any chance of relegation, while also keeping their chance to qualify for the Provincial Cup alive. Both teams created chances early, but the defenses were resolute. SAFC’s Emmanuel Ekeh had no fewer than three glorious looks in the first half to open the scoring, but he failed to convert. Port Moody’s defense was anchored by Nick Leonard, with Kevin Comeau also having a strong match and Chris Attadia putting himself about effectively in midfield. Up front, for the Gunners both Tudor Mihaila and Cole Almond were causing fits for SAFC. However, the Red Bulls defensive unit of Dan Hamson and Christian Mendoza, along with Dylan Jordan and Nathan Peters were doing their level best to keep Port Moody at bay. When the visitors did manage to break through, SAFC goalkeeper Cameron Frost was on form to make the necessary saves as this match reached the break scoreless. In the second half, Ekeh managed to finally convert on yet another chance, this time a full blown breakaway, giving this game its breakthrough. As the minutes ebbed away it looked like SAFC’s stout defending was going to earn them all the points in this match. However, for the second week running, Port Moody’s Dale Long popped up with a last gasp goal and this time it was enough to earn the Gunners a point. Overall, it was a disappointing result for Port Moody as, after the rest of the weekend’s results, they were eliminated from title contention. Ayoub Omar also played well for SAFC on the night as the first year side inched closer to officially securing another season in the UPL.

CCB Azad 0-3 Coastal FC – Friday 8:45pm; Newton Athletic Park #4

Title contention also loomed large for second place Coastal who needed maximum points in order to stay championship hunt. CCB held Coastal to a 0-0 draw in their previous meeting at Newton and set up to frustrate their visitors once more. Defender Ernesto Arteaga and goal keeper Josh Banipal were sharp early for CCB and Coastal surely had to begin to wonder if they were in for another frustrating night. However, talisman Jake Starheim refused to be stifled on this evening and his offensive presence was felt as he set up Shawn Parkes to open the scoring and ensure Coastal were not held off the scoresheet this time around. CCB attempted to push back and find a way into the game, led by their dynamic midfielder Gagan Josan. Unfortunately for the home side, while they did create some scrambles and set pieces in and around the opposing penalty area, they failed to really test Coastal goalkeeper Andrew Kowan. The visitors would score and insurance marker through Cam Kamensek before Starheim himself got in on the act, scoring from the penalty spot in the second half. Coastal would actually miss another penalty at the death, but, overall, it was job done for them on the night.

Abbotsford United 2-1 Langley United – Saturday 6pm; Mouat Turf #3

League leaders Abbotsford know that they will be champions if they can will their remaining matches, however, in the UPL that is easier said than done. This week they faced a dangerous Langley side and were immediately behind the eight-ball when they conceded an early penalty. Connor Hildebrant duly stepped up to the spot and dispatched the kick to give the visitors the lead inside five minutes. Despite earning a number of set piece opportunities, Abby were not able to convert on any of their chances and were almost deeper in the hole right before half time with goalkeeper Mike Haladin called upon to make a remarkable save in order to maintain just a one goal deficit for his side. On the other side of the break, Abbotsford emerged hungry and ratcheted up their search for an equalizer. This, though, left them exposed on the counter attack and Langley’s Brody Thomas was all to happy to pounce on several chances. Once more it was Haladin to the rescue for Abbotsford as he made a string of saves to deny the prolific Langley attacker. Sahib Phagura and David Parfett were creating several great openings for Abbotsford, but the home side were unable to capitalize on any of them. It was starting to look like it would be a frustrating evening in Abbotsford for the locals until Colton O’Neill found Parman Minhas and he curled a lovely effort that Langley goalkeeper Hudson Nelles got fingertips to, but could not keep out. With half an hour remaining, Abbotsford continued to press for a winning goal, while still leaving themselves vulnerable to counterattacks. Defender Tammer Byrne was doing yeoman’s work racing across the Abby back line trying to put out fires and wherever Byrne failed, Haladin was in position to make the saves. Both of these UPL stalwart sides were puting on a fantastically entertaining display for those in attendance. In the final minutes, Langley looked to have finally punished Abbotsford for leaving themselves exposed at the back one too many times. The shot was labelled for the far corner but Haladin, at full stretch, got a piece of the shot and Ryan Liddiard was on the spot to clean the loose ball off the line before anyone in a Langley shirt could force it home! That proved to be the break that Abbotsford needed as the next time up the pitch Roshan Gosal capped off one of his trademark runs with a thumping finish that proved to be the decisive goal. “Wow, what a way to win it” said Abbotsford manager Alan Alderson adding that it was “fun to do it in front of a good crowd of our loyal supporters.”

Vancouver United SC 0-3 Surrey United Firefighters – Saturday 6:15pm; Hjorth Turf #1

On the back of their first win of the season, Vancouver United hosted a Surrey side that were looking to consolidate a Provincial Cup spot. Whatever momentum Vancouver United may have hoped to carry into this game from their previous win quickly evaporated when Firefighters took an early lead. Fullback Ryan Donald made a brilliant overlapping run before cutting the ball back to Sean Einerson who slotted into the far side netting just over ten minutes into the match. The match settled down, though, and Vancouver United began to get a foothold in proceedings. Defender Rajvir Basi was having another strong game for the home side and, as halftime approached, his side were growing in confidence. In the second half, things remained nip and tuck until Surrey defender Steph Leslie was undone by a bad bounce and Vancouver United were in clean on goal. Alert to the danger, Surrey United keeper Nuno Jesus was quickly off his line to close down the angle and he made a terrific save to keep his side in the lead. This sparked Surrey back into life and Einerson notched an insurance marker when he scored his second goal of the match, this time with Josh Miles providing the set up after some lovely wide play. The game was over as a contest soon after when Donald again was the creator, doing the heavy lifting before putting it on a platter for youth call up Malachi Emerson to finish off. While not figuring in the scoring, fellow youth call up Marley Edwards had a strong game for Firefighters, lending his contributions to the burgeoning youth movement for Surrey United.

BROWNS SOCIAL HOUSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

This week’s Brown’s Social House Player of the week is Mike Haladin from Abbotsford United. There is little doubt that Haladin was the difference maker in Abbotsford’s 2-1 win over Langley that sees them remain in first place with the UPL title now withing their sights. Haladin made a number of crucial saves to keep his team in the match after they conceded an early penalty and then was sharp right up until the end of the match, making a spectacular save that provided his team with a chance to score a winning goal of their own.

With either just three or four games left to play for all of the UPL’s teams, every week can put a team closer to clinching something in the standings. Surrey United play SAFC as they look to ensure themselves of a place in the top four and guarantee Provincial Cup qualification, while SAFC are seeking to keep a shock bid for fifth place and a spot in the Provincial Cup alive. A win for SAFC, or a loss for CCB against Langley, would guarantee that the Red Bulls finish outside the bottom two, thereby avoiding any possibility of relegation. CCB are the team that could possibly catch them, but the Langley side they are playing this weekend are the aforementioned team that are trying to catch Surrey in fourth and trying to keep SAFC at bay in sixth. After losing their UPL crown, Port Moody cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves or else they could very quickly find themselves as the team who is trying to hold onto fourth place and a guaranteed berth in the Provincial Cup. They face Abbotsford who are, obviously, trying to maintain their lead atop the table over chasers Coastal. Coastal cannot afford any slip ups or else they could leave Abbotsford just a point away from becoming champions. There task is not necessarily a straightforward on though against last place Vancouver United who have been much improved in recent weeks and are looking to get off the bottom by catching CCB. So clearly every team in the UPL has something to play for this weekend!

No, this was more of the prison variety, where the meek, skinny, white-collar-crime-white-guy (sorry CCB guys, it's the only analogy that works) just turns over, closes his eyes, and waits for it to be done. No fight, no resistance, maybe a bit of sweet whispering. Apparently even old keeper Colton got into the mix as a striker, and whipped in a cross to set up the world's shortest midfielder for a header, beating a substantially taller CB. When an open men's premier squad is quite literally playing people out of position just so as to keep it interesting, you know the opponent is, shall we say, "not up for it". Told an inter squad scrimmage would have served as more useful training for matches that matter.

The ccb team was playing everyone out of position due to not having players. They started the game with 10 players and had a 50 year old striker playing who did alright. Injuries have hampered our squad and that’s why it was 5-0. Nothing to post about and brag about on social media. With our full squad there your looking at the reverse result so let’s not get carried away here.
