'24 Hour Party People' is the new Steve Coogan film and documents the rise, fall, and bit in the middle of Manchester's Factory Records saga which spawned luminaries like The Buzzcokcs, Happy Mondays, Joy Division, and New Order, to name but a few. Coogan plays Tony Wilson, the factory Records boss and the whole thing is superb. Fcuking superb. The soundtrack is also superb. Fcuking superb.

It's all rather good and worth a look when it gets to that cinema on Burrard that actually takes the time to play some decent films sometimes. This time in 2004.

Nivk Hornby...

Saw the new Hugh Grant film, 'About a Boy' yesterday and, although it certainly sounds like the name of a film that might document the depraved and unnatural urges of CDK, it's a film based on the Nick Hornby novel of the same name. Hugh Grant is brilliant and, while he used to come across as a complete fop and someone you wouldn't object to battering with a large piece of wood, he certainly seems to be far less than Buckfast now than he used to. Now he seems like the kind of fella you'd like to have a couple pints with. Or am I being led by the nose by the PR hype machine wheeled out to re-generate one-trick pony actors like our Hugh? Dunno. Whatever the case, About a Boy is a top film with a top soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy and it was filmed in Islington, home of casa Fastshow.

There are a disappointingly few tits on display (unless Hugh Grant qualifies) but some of the swearing is useful and, all in all, it seems like the kind of film keeper could get all dolled up in his Birkenstocks, collect his missus in his Volkswagen Campervan from the female remand centre in which she is held, and enjoy watching after gorging on seaweed and tofu at the Kitsilano Organic Sushi Hut. It probably won't be released in Vancouver for another 17 years so that will allow him the time to fire off another student loan application in order to be able to afford such a big night out.
