About time.

27.01.2003 | Michael Ballack pulled the strings, Giovane Elber turned on the samba style, Mehmet Scholl supplied the attacking flair. The forwards nearly always grab the headlines when Bayern play, but in Sunday's 3-0 success over Borussia Monchengladbach, a different set of players stepped into the limelight. Principal among them was Owen Hargreaves, who finally got off the mark with a first goal in his 58th Bundesliga appearance.

How dare you leave out Bayerns best defender, Keeper?

The match statistics spoke volumes for the Croatian International's performance. He played the ball 93 times, more than any other player, and won 76 percent of the challenges he went in for. Oliver Kahn has special reason to thank his defence: he has now gone 623 minutes without conceding a goal, and needs to remain unbeaten for only 113 minutes more to beat his own record from the championship winning 1999 season.

How dare you!

You know, I was wondering why you didn't attach a photo of Bayern "sexiest" player....

It's obvious that the voting had all the integrity of a 'Best player on TTP (take 4.5)' poll.

A record 802 minutes had elapsed between Marcio Amoroso's strike on 9 November 2003 and Naohiro Takahara heading home with the last touch of Sunday's game. "It's a shame, we could have kept it going longer. But I had targeted 800 minutes, and that I've achieved," the 33 year-old observed, after busting his own previous record of 736 minutes set in 1999 midway through the first half.

. . .

And Takahara earned more than just a fortunate point for his team. A Hamburg brewery had promised 500 litres of beer to the player who brought Kahn's run to an end. "I'm just happy I was able to help my team," Japan's Player of the year said, "we'll drink the beer together." And if the opportunity presents itself, perhaps Kahn will be offered a glass too.

Bayern locks up its 18th league title with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg. Meanwhile, they're still preparing to wrap up a double with a win in the DFB-Cup final against Kaiserslautern.

nice

now this'd be a party...:wa:

from bayern munich website .

...But there was still a surprise in store, as Uli Hoeneß announced an unexpected thank-you gift to the club’s loyal supporters. There would be another party, probably on 2 August after the first home game of the new season, with ‘a limitless supply of free beer’.

31.05.2003 | Owen Hargreaves could hardly have hoped for a better comeback. After an absence through injury of more than five weeks, the English international unexpectedly appeared again in the starting line-up of the German champions – and contributed handsomely to Bayern’s 11th cup victory.

With a beautifully measured cross onto the head of Michael Ballack from a 3rd minute free-kick, the 22-year-old laid on the goal that gave his team an early 1-0 lead in consummate style. Five minutes later he was adjudged to have been unfairly brought down by Lembi as he and the defender chased the ball into the Kaiserslautern penalty area, and Ballack made it 2-0 from the spot.

In the run up to the cup final there was lengthy speculation over how to fill Bayern’s right midfield slot. Ottmar Hitzfeld started out with five candidates on his list, but after Sebastian Deisler dropped out through illness the Bayern coach had to decide between Mehmet Scholl, Markus Feulner, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Hargreaves himself.

Hitzfeld’s inspired choice was the Canadian-born Hargreaves. Perhaps in making his decision ‘The General’ had in mind the impressive display by Hargreaves in his last final. In Milan in 2001, when Owen delivered a magnificent defensive midfield performance alongside Stefan Effenberg, the star of the all-rounder rose. In Berlin just two years later he shone anew.
All this and a Bundesligia double (league & cup) to make up for the Champions League disaster.

24.06.2003 | Just two days after the end of the Spanish league season, the Bayern transfer machine has rolled into action with an official bid for Deportivo La Coruna striker Roy Makaay. "We made La Coruna a firm financial offer last week and we're waiting for an answer," the Bayern chairman told the Bild tabloid.

The Dutch international finished as the Primera Division's leading scorer with 29 goals, but even this failed to help Depor defend their championship crown last term. His proposed move to the German double winners "all now depends on what La Coruna want to do," Rummenigge continued, although the player had already indicated "he wants to come to us."

Makaay's agent Rob Jansen was confident his client would be appearing for Munich soon. "Bayern is the club Roy would like to join," he revealed to the kicker magazine. However, the deal could yet fizzle out if the Spanish club insist on the 60 million Euro fee Depor President Augusto Cesar Lendoiro says is needed to buy the 28 year-old out of his contract, which still has two years to run.
With luck, this'll be the new guy to replace the soon-to-be-leaving Giovanni Elber.

It's a deal.
05.08.2003 | Following a deal struck between Bayern and Deportivo La Coruna on Monday evening, prolific striker Roy Makaay landed at the Munich-Erding airstrip in a chartered Lear jet at 1 pm on Tuesday, preparing to sign a four-year contract at the Bavarian club.
German champions had paid 17.7 million euros

Are you sure?

Makaay move suffers new hiccup
First Published: Aug 05, 2003

Dutch striker Roy Makaay arrived to begin his new career with German giants Bayern Munich and announced it was a dream move - before discovering that his transfer had hit a new snag.

"I'm delighted to be here because I've wanted to play for Bayern for a long time now," the 28-year-old, who switched to the Bundesliga from Deportivo La Coruna, told the bayern website.

However, he then had to wait a little longer to complete his move when the press conference called to officially announce his arrival was postponed until Wednesday because of mix-up over paperwork.

Makaay had arrived here in the morning to undergo a medical, with a press conference called for 1600 local time (1400GMT).

But that was delayed by three hours before being called off completely until the following day.

"We faxed a written version of what we had orally agreed to Deportivo, but that fax has remained unanswered," said Bayern spokesman Markus Hoerwick.

"We expect the transfer to take place, but to announce it officially now would make no sense."

According to the German media, Makaay, who fired in 29 goals last season in Spain, will cost 17.7 million euros (20million dollars) with Bayern hoping the striker will spearhead their Champions League campaign.

He is due to sign a four-year contract.

"The negotiations have been tough, but we're pleased to have signed a top European striker for Bayern," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Makaay will wear the number ten shirt at Munich taking over from Swiss international Ciriaco Sforza.

Bayern will be Makaay's fourth club.

He made his Dutch first division debut with Vitesse Arnheim at the age of 18, scoring 49 goals in 109 league appearances.

He then moved to Tenerife in 1997, before moving on to Deportivo La Coruna two years later where he hit 76 goals in 130 games.

He won his first cap for the Netherlands in 1996 in a 3-1 win over Wales, while in the Champions League he has netted 11 times in 30 games, eight of them last season.

Didn't manage to score in his first game (a friendly v. Nuremberg) but that kit suits him well, nonetheless.
