I am looking for an External Hard Drive to house my MP3, Videos, Pictures, and for general backups etc...

Best Buy has a 500GB external hard drive by Seagate on for $119.00

Is that a decent deal? can anyone provide suggestions/feedback?

I am not that savvy when it comes to all things technical...

If your computer hs a Firewire port get a firewire external hard drive, you'll save your self many hours.

Hmmm, isn't USB 2 faster?

Doesn't really matter I think as within the next 3-5 years, both the next gen of USB & Firewire will blow current speeds away.

Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then Hi-Speed USB 2.0 show:

Read Test:
5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

Write Test:
5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

Yes, but what version of FireWire was used in the tests?

As I understand it, FW800 isn't supported well?

CS: I have emailed a copy of Teh Intraweb to you.:D

Very true. Much faster than either flavour of USB but most installed Firewire ports still only run 400 Mbps. USB2 kind of loses its appeal when you're trying to move/copy large amounts of data on a regular basis.

JBN: Señora Trece uses 3 external drives for her company backups, and swaps between them daily. Do you intend to keep this drive attached to your computer, or move it around? I have one external (750 GB Maxtor OneTouch) that I have to keep re-initializing whenever I plug it in...
