Serbia were up 1-0 after an early pen on Sunday, but the game was called just before the end of the first half. Two terrible injuries for Serbia, both of which required ambulances. The first one was fcuked. Ref called the game after the second injury.

Played the remaining 51 minutes last night. Lomas scored late and won on pens.
I tell you what, the Lomas got some goalkeeper.

Back to the patch on Saturday.
Do Serbia still record their games ? Wouldn’t mind seeing the highlights of this game and the Lomas goalkeeper in action :)

@Canucks4Ever and @TC3 to update their predictions after this round of games ?

I haven't played against Lomas in years but their first half display was typical Lomas try hard, late challenges and moaning. Nice to see things haven't changed. :p

Serbia had their chances to put this to bed before pks but lacked the finish. I think Serbia wins if the game isn't abandoned because Lomas were after it in the second fixture and looked like a different team. A couple of questionable calls both ways by the ref but I don't think he determined the game imo.

Great highlights once again on YouTube.

Being on the wrong side of some 50/50s and picking the wrong upset has hurt my average. Fortunately, there are more games for me to make up some ground. The Div. 2 Cup is always unpredictable and of the eight matches on the docket this weekend, most could go either way. It is make or break time for the prognostications, as well as for the teams themselves as we close in on the cup final and a pair of berths in the Provincial Cup.

Round of 32: 12/16

Overall: 36/43

Completely Baseless Predictions - Round of 16

Metropolitan FC A (2A) v Euro FC (3C)
Neither of these sides have had to break much of a sweat to reach this point in the competition. Euro have dispatched a pair of fellow lower Division 3 sides while Metro were able to enjoy a training session in their first match of the competition against Westside Black Aces, winning 10-0. Having already achieved a much coveted return to Division 1, Students are able to know focus entirely on defending their Division 2 Cup title, before leaving the division and allowing a new name to take over next season. Euro have had a decent run, but this would be an upset beyond all imagining.

Siaron (3A) v Strathcona (2B)
In perhaps the most compelling tie of the round, 3A leaders, and promotion favourites, Siaron take on Division 2 side Strathcona. Siaron have already knocked off a Division 2 team in the competition when they beat Romania in the first round. They will once again be the home side in this match and that means their ungodly 10am Sunday morning kickoff time at Trillium. Despite sitting mid table, Strathcona's league position is misleading. If not for playing an ineligible player earlier in the season, a stunt that cost them six points, they would be in the thick of the title race and actually hold their promotion fate in their own hands. Instead it will take a solid run in just to put them in a position to qualify for the Provincial Cup. Having, presumably, learned their lesson after their faux pas, Strathcona are actually on a seven match unbeaten run since "losing" that game. A deep cup run looks a real possibility for them and, assuming they can negotiate an early Sunday kickoff, they are the favourites to progress from this one.

Meraloma FC A (2A) v Snipers (2A)
Down early, but not out, Lomas A took advantage of the second half of their match with 2B leaders Serbia having to be rescheduled due to some unfortunate injuries. When the game resumed Tuesday night it was all Lomas as they piled on the pressure, eventually equalizing and then ultimately winning on penalties. That has earned them a date with Snipers who look to be building back to the title challenging form they showed four or five seasons ago as they try to secure a Provincial Cup place. Certainly they have suffered no fools in cup play, dispatching a pair of Division 3 sides by a combined score of 15-0. Lomas are hardly a lower league side, however, as they side immediately behind Snipers in the table and they too harbour ambitions of reaching Provincial Cup play. This sets up as a well matched affair. The teams met earlier this season and Snipers edged out a 1-0 win. That was on the turf at University Hill, though, not the grass at Connaught Park. Weather conditions have allowed Lomas to play on their home pitch just once since the beginning of November, with their previous cup matches having been forced onto turf. Their record at Connaught, though is fantastic, as they are 4-2-1 with 31 goals for and only seven against. This one really looks like it will come down to where it gets played with Snipers likely to have the edge on turf but Lomas at home on the grass. Weather looks good right now, so I'll take Lomas.

Binger's Army (2B) v NK Hrvat (2A)
What a compelling tilt this sets up with between two of the VMSL's most storied franchises. Games like this are what the cup is all about, so it is definitely the MOTR. Both of these teams give cup competition the respect it deserves, with Hrvat often saving their best for a good cup run, while Binger's have been known to oust Premier teams back in their Imperial Cup days. Hrvat were finalists last season while Binger's, having dropped down to this level, look capable of a deep cup run. Hrvat were once a Division 1 side, many years ago, and it is likely that these two teams have not encountered each other since those days, so it should be a compelling battle. Hrvat are not able to earn promotion this season and will be eyeing another deep cup run and a chance to return to the Provincial Cup. The Army still have it all to play for and, while things are starting to look somewhat bleaker when it comes to their bid for an immediate return to Division 1, you can bet they will give the cup everything they have got. This should be a great match for the neutrals and really a proper cup tie. Definitely a coin toss as well and it could easily go either way. The winner of this one has every reason to think they can make it all the way to the final. For perhaps sentimental reasons I will tip the Army for a good cup run, but this is about as close to a pick 'em as the VMSL can serve up!

GFC United Lions A (2B) v Richmond Olympics (2B)
A date with a lower division side, SFC Temple, in the previous round allowed GFC to break out of a three match losing streak and claim their first win of 2020. That league form has all but surely cost the newly promoted GFC any chance at back to back promotions. As can happen with teams in their first season at a higher level, the New Year seems to have seen the bottom fall out of things somewhat. Richmond have been fairly steady all season. They are a veteran group that was never going to seriously contend for the title, but are certainly capable of a performance on their day, a fact they have proven already by taking points of some of the division's top sides. Olympics have taken points off all five of the top teams in the group, including a draw with GFC in the first match after the break. Their other encounter was a narrow 2-1 win for GFC when they were at their table topping best. Those days seem a long time ago now and Richmond will surely be up for this match, given they have nothing else to really play for this season. Their recent league results have been less than inspiring, but they have taken care of business efficiently in the cup. I see them using their experience to knockout a less mature team, so I will make this one my Upset Special of the round.

Meraloma FC B (3C) v Lobbans (3C)
After a drab 0-0 again Division 2 relegation candidates Gastown, Lomas B group prevailed in the penalty shootout that followed. Lobbans were actually beaten in a slight upset by fellow Division 3C side Santos B in the last round, but have been given new life thanks to Santos fielding an ineligible player. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Lobbans return to continue their cup quest in a quarter that might well be up for grabs all of a sudden. As two of only five remaining Division 3 sides in the competition, it is more than likely that the winner here could well be the lower Division side that makes the deepest run this season. Lobbans are focused on their promotion run, but a cup run never hurts morale. The one meeting so far this season between the sides was a comfortable 4-0 win for Lobbans, but that was on home turf. Much is made of the advantage that Lomas have at home on the "Cabbage Patch" at Connaught Park. That should be an equalizer in this one, though Lobbans did go away to the equally, if not more, awful China Creek and claim victory against title rivals Bombastic. As for momentum, one gets the sense that it is starting to build in the Lomas camp, but, at the same time, it is difficult to anticipate how a team will respond when they literally come back from the dead. Toss up here, but I will follow the league table, despite it biting me last week, and pick Lobbans once more.

Shaheen (2A) v BCT Hurricane Tigers (3A)
The upset of the round last round went to Tigers who knocked off Division 2 side Astro. That has earned them a trip to the North Shore to play Shaheen. With promotion not happening again this season, Shaheen and their talisman Milad Mehrabi will surely be targeting the cup as a consolation prize. Knocking off Astro was impressive, but Shaheen are in a different category. It is likely midnight for Tigers and their Cinderella run.

Twin Arrows (2B) v Marpole Trpoics (2A)
Toss up in this one between two lower mid-table Division 2 side that have had decently easy cup draws to get to this point. Twin Arrows are technically not out of the woods yet in terms of relegation, but are looking like they should have enough to get it over the line. Marpole are confirmed safe in their first season after promotion and are just playing out the string, which one would assume means they could focus on the cup. Twin Arrows seem to be in slightly better form at the minute though and are scoring goals freely. In their last four matches, two league wins and two cup wins via shootout, they have scored twelve goals. They have also conceded ten time however, so it appears to be a question of, can they score their way out of trouble? Marpole have been rather average in their two cup wins, a 2-0 success over Div. 2 strugglers Rino's and then 1-0 past mid-table Div. 3 side PCOV. Those results were sandwiched around a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of leaders Metro. This is a classic cup match where hope spring eternal in both camps. I'll take Twin Arrows.

Out of pure curiosity, who was the ineligible player dressed for Santos?? Could have been a Latin guy signed to another team?????

A perfect Round of 16 on the prediction front was a real shot in the arm as we are now down to the last eight. Only one Division 3 team remains, while two of four seeds have been eliminated. Additionally, only two of the remaining teams already occupy Provincial Cup spots, meaning there is plenty on the line for both the teams that remain in the competition, as well as for those on the outside looking in...

Round of 16: 8/8

Overall: 44/51

Completely Baseless Predictions - Quarterfinals

Metropolitan A (2A) v Strathcona (2B)
Right off the hop this is the MOTR. Metro are set for their first real test of the competition after shrugging aside a pair of Div. 3 teams. Having already captured the 2A title, Students are fully focused on trying to defend the cup title they won last year. They now take on a strong Strathcona side who are a bit of a dark horse given their league standing. They were caught cheating earlier this year and, without those sanctions, would be in the promotion hunt at the top of 2B. This might be the best game in terms of two top teams going at it prior to the final itself, plus it is a cross-pool match up which always adds a layer of intrigue. Metro have only lost one game this season and it came back in September. Strathcona have only lost two games this season, setting aside the match in which they were penalized. Metropolitan have blown all of Division 2 away by scoring 75 goals in league play, plus another dozen in their two cup matches. However, Students look to have had a few more "free hits", so to speak, in 2A and have taken advantage of those. There is every reason to think that they should be favourites in this match, and the likely are, but the league and cup double is hard to achieve. I will make this my upset special and say that Strathcona shock the field by advancing.

Meraloma A (2A) v Binger's Army (2B)
Another great crossover match up in this one with two classic VMSL sides tangling on the grass at Connaught. Lomas leaned on their home field advantage to pick off Snipers last round, but, of all the teams in the tournament, Bingers might be the least vulnerable to the "Cabbage Patch" conditions. The Army have played at just about every field in the VMSL during their tenure, including the grass at Hillcrest, Adanac, etc. The Army seem to have recruited some new blood this season and perhaps some of them are turf snobs, but likely the core of the team still knows how to get things done in the muck. Both these teams have to be thinking about reaching the final and potentially lifting some silverware. Both sides also have enough league games backlogged that they may be able to climb into a Provincial Cup place through that route, but, the cup is very much an option and, perhaps, slightly more exciting. Lomas have scored more than Binger's this season, but, again, this seems to be attributable again to some "weaker" teams in 2A plus the fact that they have pressed their advantage at Connaught. I expect a very close game and definitely a toss up in terms of result. I think cup magic might be starting to swell within the Army's ranks and it seemed to work for my prediction last week against Hrvat so I will got to that well again.

Richmond Olympics (2B) v Lobbans (3C)
It is a Cinderella showdown in this match with Lobbans, back from the dead and now the lone remaining Division 3 side in the tournament against a mid-table Richmond side. Richmond have pulled off some decent results and were on form in the last round when they scored four second half goals to comeback against seeded GFC to advance. Lobbans were literally dead and buried before being handed a second chance thanks to Santos fielding an ineligible player and they took full advantage by knocking off Loma's B side. It is all gravy for these teams but, being just two wins away from the final and a berth in the Provincial Cup, no doubt each side will be up for this match, while also fancying their chances to progress. Lobbans have proven their credentials as a Div. 3 promotion favourite when they knocked off Div. 2 relegation candidate Greencaps B in Round 1. As for Richmond, they may be the best .500 team in the VMSL given their ability to knock off the big guns, plus they look to have saved their best for the cup having scored 12 goals and conceded just two in three matches. Tough to bet against that kind of form and given that Lobbans this will easily be the toughest test Lobbans have encountered so far I will say it is midnight for them while the ball goes on for Richmond.

Shaheen (2A) v Twin Arrows (2B)
Probably the most straightforward match up of the round in this one. Shaheen and Milad Mehrabi have nothing left to play for except this cup and the Provincials, so you can be sure they will go hard after the chance to lift these trophies. They have come through their first two matches without conceding a goal. Mehrabi has scored three times while Meysam Soltani has three as well. It looks like a well-oiled machin on the North Shore at the minute and Shaheen are probably wondering why they could not have been this ruthless in dispatching their opposition all season. After an exceptional season last year, Twin Arrows are back to fighting off relegation, a position they have found themselves in before. It looks like they should have enough to be safe, but they still cannot rest comfortably just yet. They will certainly give it their best shot against Shaheen, but they are most definitely underdogs here.

Had the pleasure of playing against the meralomas today. Have to say they are a pure class organization. Welcomed us in for beers after the game and were gentleman after the match in a game they deserved more from. I have played for 20 years and the sportsmanship displayed by the Lomas makes you love the amateur game

More than any other competition, this tournament holds the Provincial Cup fates of so many teams hostage right up until its final act. Finally, after these semifinals, the league will some idea of where teams need to finish to qualify for the Provincial B Cup. Depending on these results, Div. 2 sides will need to be either top two or top three in their pool, with the chance for third or fourth to be enough to potentially earn a playoff. That means there is plenty at stake at Memorial on Saturday beyond just the chance to play for some silverware!

Quarterfinals: 3/4

Overall: 47/55

Completely Baseless Predictions - Semifinals

Metropolitan A (2A) v Binger's Army (2B)
It is the perfect dichotomy between two teams who know each other, but have not seen each other in some time and who look to be headed in opposite directions. A few seasons ago Students and the Army met regularly in Division 1. Metro have been languishing in Division 2 for three years now, while Binger's were relegated to this level last season. They have been in separate pools all year, so this will mark their first opportunity to renew acquaintances and it is definitely the MOTR. Students are finally heading back up, overcoming the disappointment of a runners up finish last season by winning the Div. 2 Cup, the Provincial B Cup and, now, the promotion they so desperately crave. Binger's would love to make an immediate return to the division that they were long the elder-statesmen of and they do have a chance if they can run the table in their final four league matches. The Army can turn their focus to those matches later though, in the meantime they are focused on claiming a long overdue piece of silverware for one of the VMSL's most stalwart programs. They will be up against it entirely with Metro boasting the best offense in Div. 2, along with the best defensive record. That said, the Army have the second best defensive record across the board, so they will be in with a punchers chance here. Students are likely to be the favourites, but, for all their dominance so far this year, they just do not really present like an infallible side. I think they can be got at and I think Binger's are the team to do it, so make this one my Upset Special as well.

Richmond Olympics (2B) v Shaheen (2A)
All credit to Richmond Olympics for climbing to within a game of the Provincials, as well as a chance to lift a trophy, after an otherwise middling season. This is hardly unprecedented, as NK Hrvat managed something similar last season going on a run to the final after a rather unremarkable league campaign. Olympics also have one or two veteran holdovers from Richmond's days in Premier and that experience has likely shown through during their cup run. That said, they have not exactly been handed the toughest of paths to reach this point. They have knocked off three teams from Division 3 and a GFC Lions side that seemed to have the bottom fall out of what began as a very strong season. True, Richmond can only play the team in front of them and they have done a fine job of doing just that, but it is not like they have been battle tested to come this far. Shaheen will be by far the best team they have encountered in this competition and it will definitely be a step up for Olympics. Of course everywhere Shaheen go they are preceded by reputation of all-star striker Milad Mehrabi. While they were likely hoping that the former National Championship leading scorer would lift them to promotion, that dream will have to wait at least another season. Irrespective of how effective his contribution was or was not to their league endeavours, he has certainly pulled his weight in their cup quest. He has scored four of the nine goals they have required to win the three games they have needed to get to this stage. Shaheen have also been tidy at the back, conceding just one goal in the competition. They have played two Division 2 teams and a top Division 3 side and looked well in control. Make no mistake, they are here for the trophy. Richmond are certainly a sentimental favourite, but Shaheen are not a desirable match up for the veterans at Olympics. That sounds like midnight chiming...
