End of the Cinderella run for Bowen this afternoon against Coquitlam. I thought they were taking us a bit too lightly early on and we created 3 clear chances in the opening 15 minutes, including a couple of 1 v 1s with their keeper that our striker missed. But they grew into the half and scored two goals only to have Bowen score a second to make it 2-1 at the break. We only had 12 guys and they were tiring early in the half. Coquitlam attack well with a lot of great movement in the midfield. They got two more quite close together then we clawed one back and had a brief last gasp really, including a chip that just missed and another 1 v 1 against their keeper, who made a great play on our striker. They got another late in the game.
Good run for us overall.

Alas, no upset after all in the quarters as, try as Greencaps B might, there were to be no Division 3 teams left for the semis. It is down to the top teams competing for a chance to lift some silverware ahead of their Provincial Cup quests.

Completely Baseless Predictions: Div. 2 Cup
Quarter Finals: 3/4
Overall: 35/48

Semi Finals:

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Strikers
Despite being a domestic battle, this one has to be the MOTR. Strikers are the only team this season to beat Lupi, but can they repeat the feat? At the second time of asking in the league they fell well short of the mark. The Junior Wolves toyed with them before skating out to an easy 4-0 win and avoiding a potential title impacting banana peel in the process. Strikers always seem to have a cup run in them and, after knocking off one of the top teams from the other group in the recently relegated Metropolitan, they must surely be thinking "why not us?" With their league season complete and a place in the Provincial Cup mathematically secured, Strikers have been able to focus solely on this competition and that has seemingly payed dividends. Still however, Lupi are a daunting task. the Tri-Cities boys are within touching distance of their ultimate goal of back to back promotions and that it really a matter of "when', at this point, not "if." With the most goals for and fewest against, Coquitlam have clearly asserted themselves as the class of this division. It`s tough to see them slipping up, even against a plucky Strikers side who has proved them to be mortal.

Greencaps A v 13th Legion
This should be a spicy one as two well matched teams with similar styles clash for the right to play for a trophy. The Legion will all but certainly remain in Division 2 next season and their inability to get points off of the team they will finish second behind, Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi, is easily the difference for them this season. They now get a chance to face off against the other seemingly all but promoted team in Greencaps from 2B in and, with a win, might take solace in knowing that, if not for Lupi, they were likely best Division 2 side this year. The Irishmen are no slouches though as they rose above all the rest last season to claim the Provincial B Cup. They have followed that up with what is surely to be a promotion campaign and will be looking to complete the treble and grab the Div 2 Cup on their way out before taking a stab at defending their Provincial crown. Both play a bruising "North American" style and are straight line teams. This one is likely to come down to who can capitalize on their chance as well as, perhaps, whose side's keeper can make that one extra save. It's flip a coin territory at this point, but I will go with the 2B leaders and Provincial Champs given that the Legion are really good at coming up just short.

Well, after a long, hard fought, snow impeded competition, we have reached the final and what a show it should be! VMSL Cup Final day is being hosted at Coquitlam Town Centre and the Div. 2 Cup Final goes at 12:30pm.

Completely Baseless Predictions: Div. 2 Cup
Semi Finals: 2/2
Overall: 37/50

Final:

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Vancouver Greencaps A
This is what Cup Finals are made for; it's best on best and the Division 2A and 2B winners meet after knocking away all of their would be challengers. Both teams have only tasted defeat on a single occasion this season and both have made winning a habit dating back to last season. Lupi all but walked to promotion from Division 3 last year and have now vaulted into Division 1 with back to back promotion efforts. Meanwhile, Greencaps, after hovering around the promotion places in recent seasons, seemingly had everything click at the end of last year as they caught fire to win the Provincial B Cup and carried that momentum into a title and promotion winning campaign. Now these two juggernauts will clash with silverware on the line. Obviously either team could be favourite, but, with no head to head history to compare, it will come down to inference to try and find an edge. Greencaps had arguably the more difficult group for league play on paper with five recently former Division 1 teams in Gastown, Shaheen, Sarajevo and Harps as well as the only team to be demoted last season, Metropolitan. Metro Ford's 2A group consisted of many stalwart Division 2 teams, with none of those sides having played in Division 1 since it was contracted to it's current 12 team alignment. Coquitlam did have to contend with 13th Legion though, who were last season's surprise package, and, after faltering down the stretch when promotion was seemingly in hand, they were always likely to be well motivated to make amends for that goal line fumble and were certainly pre-season promotion favourites. Lupi saw them off in both of their head to head meetings and those six points were the margin by which the Tri-Cities boys won the league. Tough to get a read on Greencap's based on their cup results, as they faced only Division 3 teams until taking on the aforementioned 13th Legion in the Semi Finals. They slipped based the 2A runners up by a narrow 1-0 margin, but, a win is a win and it came against arguably the best team other than Coquitlam from the opposite side of the table. Metro Ford had a slightly more challenging path as they were dealt match ups against a couple of potential bogey teams. They had to get by an FC Serbia side that, while they had a dismal season, played Lupi tough with all three meetings finishing 1-0 in favour of the league champions. Coquitlam also had to face the only team to beat them so far this season, Vancouver Strikers, in the Semi Finals but, just like in the reverse league fixture, they were able to put their past mistakes behind them, this time mustering a 2-1 win. The only team Lupi faced from 2B was in their opener when they dispatched Harps with seemingly minimal effort, 3-0. There is really no way to get an edge from the stats, so let's look to anecdotal evidence. Greencaps have proven that they are big game players after their Provincial Cup win last season and they had no problem seizing the 2B title at the first time of asking, finding a way to win get the 1-0 win they needed against Westside. Coquitlam on the other hand, stumbled when they had a chance to lock down the title, as they were unable to come up with the goal they required to break a 0-0 stalemate with Rino's. They were handed the 2A title when 13th Legion inexplicably lost to a VUFC side with nothing to play for, already doomed to play in a relegation playoff. Similarly, in last season's Div. 2 Cup, the upstart Lupi stumbled unexpectedly at the hands of another Division 3 team, being ousted by the now defunct Cliff Cobras, after they had knocked off Division 2 competition and seemed nearly certain to make the final and earn a B Provincial berth as a Division 3 side. So when it comes to big game pedigree the scales tip in favour of the Irish lads from Vancouver. It is certainly the smallest of margins and this one sets up as an absolute cracker that could most definitely go either way, but I will give the slightest edge to the Greencaps and predict that they continue to add to their trophy case!
