Cameroon footballer Marc Vivien Foe dies, aged 28
First Published: Jun 26, 2003

Cameroon international footballer Marc Vivien Foe died after playing for his country in the Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia.

The 28-year-old was stretchered off the pitch in the 72nd minute unconscious amidst fears that he had swallowed his tongue.

The player, who spent last season on loan with Manchester City, was not the victim of a foul when he collapsed in the middle of the field.

Play was held up for six minutes as the stricken player, winning his 62nd cap, was taken to the touchline to receive attention.

A doctor from FIFA confirmed the news at the medical centre of Lyon football club's Stade Gerland shortly after the match.

FIFA handed Foe autopsy file
First Published: Jul 15, 2003

World football's governing body FIFA have been passed the results of the autopsy on Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foe who died in a Confederations Cup match in June.

The file was passed on by French justice officials who confirmed that the 28-year-old player died from a heart attack.

"The post-mortem revealed that the midfielder died from heart failure," said a FIFA statement.

"He suffered from a hereditary cardiac hypertrophia of the left ventricle, and a hypertrophia of the right ventricle.

"Comprehensive explanations provided by experts also led to the conclusion that tropical illnesses could also be ruled out as causes for the tragic death."

Foe died after collapsing during Cameroon's Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon on June 26.
