There was controversy on 72 minutes when Massimo Gobbi was shown a straight red card. Robben was trying to skip past him at the byline and Gobbi lifted his arm as he turned around, catching the player on the chest. The referee considered it to be a voluntary elbow and sent him off, a very harsh decision.

Bayer did get their goal moments later. Frey did well to beat away a Robben piledriver, but Olic knocked it across for Klose to nod in. However, replays show that Klose was at least six yards offside! It was an incredible error from the linesman and how he missed that is inexplicable.
