Caps added, a week or two ago, 4 new players: Terry Dunfield, Omar Salgado (Going to be drafted this off season 1 or 2, Alex Morfaw, and Kyle Porter.
Then it was announced in the last day or two they signed two Swiss Internationals...and it's got people talking about how the Caps may have found a loophole in the MLS rules regarding the discovery and addition of players.
They signed former Juventus starlet Davide Chiumiento and Alain Rochat (Born in Quebec moved to Swizterland at 3 months of age, counts as a domestic)
Chiumiento didn't quite pan out at Juve and has been playing in the Swiss league and actually rejected a contract with Lucerne in order to move here...his last deal was €3.2 million/3yrs... causing some folks to worry that he might be a DP come MLS, but that has tipped people off that The Caps could be circumventing the Salary Cap and acquisition rules...
Portland and WFC are going to have first right of refusal of their current players from USSF D2...which means they don't have to go through the allocation process. by signing these guys now they can avoid having other teams claim them... also it's tipped people off that the Caps have to be offering around what Chiumiento was making previously, as he turned down an improved contract from Lucerne... getting people thinking that the Caps might have front end loaded his deal so that he fits the MLS Cap once next season kicks in... like paying him a few hundred thou a year in a 3yr MLS deal but on a total 4 year contract worth 4-5 Million Euro.
Interesting stuff.
If you think about it, with these exemptions in the rules the Caps could... in theory sign any player on a free right now (Some big names come to mind) and give them a huge amount of dough for this year of the contract and register the rest of the contract with MLS so avoid DP status, etc. And even though the transfer window has closed for North American Clubs, Euro based clubs could very easily sell their players to WFC, with a loan for the rest of this season back at the Euro club, and the player still counts as a USSF D2 player (See Alain Rochat) who has been bought by WFC but immediately loaned back to FC Zurich)
I guess we will see just how much cash Luczo, Nash, Kerfoot and Co. are going to spend.
