I'd hardly say it is a blow to England.......surely they can't be that bad if they were planning on playing him much?

Most overrated player EVER....having said that, I feel bad for the guy as he has been a good professional and had a good career. Terrible timing for the man with his hope of playing in the World Cup. He is just nowhere near as good as many have made him out to be.

I agree, if that midfield is still relying on Beckham to do anything they are in deep shat.

I'll the guy this much, he inspired tens of thousands to wear boxer briefs and sport the faux hawk, and he could hit a pretty sexy set piece.

Innocent looking play... btw, Milan went on the win, closing Inter's lead to 1 pt.

With walcott and wright-phillips outside I think England will be alright, as much as you feel for the guy he didn't bring much in qualifying and just isn't what he used to be. still a becks fan, but apart from the dead ball he doesn't bring what the other midfielders can.

Best at hitting a dead ball and best crosser of all time. Two fairly important aspects of playing outside midfield. Sure he wasn't a one on one player but he didn't need to be. He would put the ball on the forwards head with a defender in his face. Can't name more then potentially a handful of players who played outside mid that were better in their prime. Obviously his looks had something to do with being a global icon, but still a fantastic player.

Are you talking about Stephen Burns or David Beckham?

I get why people hate Bex (the underwear modeling, marrying of space cadet pop star, fancy haircuts, etc), but you can't tell me he isn't (or maybe wasn't is the appropriate word now in his older, soccer relative, years) a world class player.
As mentioned previously, he is never the type of guy that dribbled anyone ever, but boy could he hit crosses and free kicks with the best of them, was a great passer and playmaker, scored some beauty goals from distance.... he was also a very tireless worker in the midfield and worked very hard defensively back in the day, now not so much of course, now he seems to float in and out of games, but with his right foot could impact a game at anytime.

But aren't all English Internationals overrated? They are the most covered international team to have not won squat since '66... ;)

regardless, an England team with him in it now, in his advancing years, never had a shot at the world cup anyways, so to me it isn't a really big blow to them anyways, save maybe in a leadership role, which the likes of Gerrard already provide... if anything they need more guys with less ego (read: Leadership ) willing to do whatever Capello tells them to do.

Stanley Matthews was a better winger. :D

No disrespect, Bulljive, but I'm guessing you haven't seen many of the Brazillian/Dutch outside midfielders/wingers of the 70s......just to name a few. Dave Beckham was good at hitting dead balls. So was Shinsuke Nakamura. So is a lad named Davies from Notts County.

Anyway, he had a good career and was a good player......but far from great. Get well soon, Mr. Beckham.

Nakamura is definitely a great dead ball expert, but hardly in the same category as Beckham. I agree there have been many better wingers....wee Jinky Johnston, Wullie Johnstone, Davie Cooper and some that weren't Scottish:D......list could go on forever. Beckham wasn't your typical winger though. Not the fastest, couldn't beat a man, but absolutely was a game breaker. In my opinion, he is amongst the greats at hitting timely freekicks and as everyone else here as attested to, could drop a ball on a dime 40 yards away. Forget the Hollywood rubbish and how he lines up his cans of coke in a fridge.....as a football player, he gave us some very memorable moments. He got through the ridiculous lynching of him after '98 and almost single-handedly got them through for 2002 against Greece. He is/was a tireless worker and had passion for the game. I feel bad for him because he put so much into the game and though he would have had limited playing time for England this world cup, he almost certainly would have gotten some time. That's the shame of it for me.

As much as it pains me to say it, if there was a minute to go and Scotland were tied with a freekick outside the box, I would wish that David Beckham were Scottish. For me, there was just no-one better.

DAncing Bear, my point with Nakamura was that there are plenty of dead ball specialists around the world and there always will be. I guess I couldn't look past the fact that Beckham couldn't tackle, head a ball, or defend. His dead ball specialty was what he was known for and of course his world wide appeal. I think he was a good professional footballer but have never used him in the same breath as footballing GREATS......

No true footballer can take any pleasure in what happened to Beckham. Fan or not it brutal to see it happen to anyone.

You are bang on Bigunit. He is a true professional. Not one coach or teammate other than Donovan has had anything negative to say and he is the last player who deserves this to happen at this point in his career.

England does not need him on the pitch, but he would be good to have on the squad for his experience and leadership qualities.

They say achilles ruptures rarely have warning signs like tendonitis and such. They happen out of the blue. Yucky injury.
