BC Minimum wage increase. 16.75 per hour

Curious what people's thoughts are on this.

As of June 1 2023 the min wage in BC has gone up 7% or 1.10 per hour to 16.75.

I get the cost of living and inflation is hard on everyone but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around some High school kid living at home with no expense is flipping burgers at McDonald's for almost 17 bucks an hour and I know my order will still be fcuked up.

IMO minimum. Wage jobs are what they are and are there for a reason. If you don't like it then better yourself.

To put it in to perspective Since 2015 minimum wage has gone up 60%.

The gap is shrinking to that next tier and it's not healthy nor do I believe its sustainable.

On the flip side, if you have kids living at home making minimum wage and not going to post secondary then they sure as hell can afford to pay room and board now!

With out telling me how old you are, what was did your first job pay?

They are all adults now and over the last couple of decades have started to "complain" about low wage conditions and whatnot... basically they struggle because their full-time job doesn't pay enough to live on above the poverty line.

Well, no shite it doesn't because those jobs are meant for teens to gain experience and have weekend booze/weed party money!

Obviously a complex issue, but I think part of it is people working later in life - especially out here on the west coast. I don't know what the numbers are, but I think the percentage of people retiring by 65 has been shrinking for a while.

The folks at the older end of the spectrum are - for the most part - in the gravy train positions. Them staying prevents the next level of worker from moving up, and so on and so on. The knock on effect is that people stay in "entry" opportunities, creating a real issue for the next generation entering the job market. Obviously a gross, gross oversimplification, but I think it's a relevant point.

As for the minimum wage itself, the socialists can make it $100 bucks an hour for all I care - I retain the ability to decide whether and to what extent I hire labour for my business. That's the thing statists just don't get - the market will react to whatever "mandatory" rules they come up with...
