Re: Azzi's Superlative Team & Player of the Week

A full slate of Premier Division games was played this past weekend highlighted once again by a couple of upsets. As a result, 7 VMSL teams have now earned the right to participate in the 2005 Province Cup playdowns. The Sapperton Rovers, ICSF Inter, Columbus-Clan FC and Croatia SC gained their berths via the Imperial Cup competition, while Surrey United, Westside Rino, and the Burnaby Canadians obtained their slots through the Premier Division standings. Five VMSL teams still have a chance to earn the last spot in the Province Cup competition—Trollers FC, Sporting Club, Firefighters FC, Metro-Ford Wolves and AFC Leopards.

The biggest upset of the weekend took place on Sunday at Adanac Park where a revitalized Westside Rino squad gained its berth into the Province Cup with a well-earned 3-1 victory over ICSF Inter. Inter, a team that has been at the top of the Group ‘A’ standings for most of the season, now finds itself 4 points behind the Sapperton Rovers in the battle for first place. ICSF took control of the match right from the opening whistle but was unable to take advantage of a couple of glorious opportunities. Finally, Andrew Corazza gave Inter the lead when he converted a brilliant pass from Jesse Dhami into the game’s first goal. The goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call for Rino’s boys as they came fighting back with a vengeance and eventually got the equalizer when a pair of veterans—James Prescott and Steve Dickinson—combined to put Westside on the scoreboard. In fact, Prescott’s long shot was deflected into the ICSF goal by a well-positioned Dickinson for Westside’s tying goal. In the second half Inter again came out strong but this time Westside was equal to the task and fought back in determined fashion. About half way through the second half Steve Deblasio, with one of his patented free kicks, drove a 20-metre shot past the wall into the bottom corner of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. About 10 minutes later, Under 21 call-up Ben Hunt found Alex Kosanin with an immaculate cross. Kosanin drove the ball towards the Inter net and found an unmarked Devin Matthews who calmly redirected it home for the insurance marker. Defensively, Jonathan Poli and Boban Aleksic had great games for Westside as did midfielders Steve Deblasio and Ben Hunt.

Also on Sunday, at Hastings Bowl, the Burnaby Canadians qualified for the Province Cup playdowns with a narrow, and rather fortunate, 1-0 decision over the snake-bitten Sporting Club. Sporting had numerous goal-scoring chances in the first half but was unable to beat a red-hot Trevor Jones in the Burnaby goal. In fact, Jones pulled off 5 sensational saves to keep the Canadians in the game. To make matters worse for Sporting, Burnaby’s goal came very late in the second half with practically the last kick of the contest. Gino Gaita scored the winner on a fine individual effort, while defensively Brian Kerr and Steve Millar turned in excellent performances for the Canadians. Despite the loss, Sporting Club is still in the running for the last berth in the Province Cup competition.

On Saturday, at South Memorial Park, Firefighters FC and Croatia SC engaged in a goalfest that eventually ended with a 6-3 victory for the Firemen. Croatia showed up for the match with only 13 players, and several of its regular starters missing. The Firefighters took advantage of the situation and were compensated with a well-earned victory. Jeff Skinner and Justin Student led the way with 2 goals each, while Greg Pears and Jeff Buchanan each added a singleton for the Firemen, while Micaheld Kovac, Niko Marcina, and Aaron Keay (with his 9th goal of the season) replied for the Croatians.

On Saturday, at Adanac Park, the Sapperton Rovers climbed into a rather comfortable 4-point lead at the top of the Group ‘A’ table as a result of a narrow and hard-fought 1-0 decision over Khalsa Sporting Club. Both teams were in desperate need to win the game and, as a result, the match was played with a great deal of intensity. Sapperton forward Luke Hogan was dangerous throughout the match, while Mike Favaro once again turned in a brilliant performance on the right flank. Favaro set up the lone goal, very late in the game, when he combined with Hogan and Matt Ormerod who finally slotted the ball home. Defensively, Sven Wagner and Brian Donald were rock solid, while the Rovers’ goalkeeper—Cory Breure—had to make 2 excellent saves to preserve the all-important victory. For Khalsa SC, midfielder Matt Mori once again turned in a strong performance, while goalkeeper Chris Johnson and defender Harry Sandhu also had excellent games. As a result of the loss—and the Trollers’ victory over Pegasus—Khalsa SC is now officially relegated to Division 1.

Also on Saturday, in a cross-over match, Trollers FC from Group ‘A’ edged Pegasus FC 2-1 in a rather sloppy affair played at Ambleside Park. Pegasus opened the scoring on a great cross from Ryan Powell that Stedman Espinoza converted into the go-ahead goal. Later in the first half, Pegasus’ goalkeeper Steve London suffered an injury and had to be replaced by veteran striker Rob Reed. In the second half, Espinoza was ejected from the game, leaving Pegasus with only 9 men. The Trollers took advantage of the situation and tied the game with Drew Lewis scoring the equalizer. Rob Reed was then replaced in goal by Paul Dailly and the Trollers’ Sean Taylor scored the winner soon thereafter. All in all, it was a very poorly played game with neither team demonstrating a real desire to win—quite a contrast from the Sapperton – Khalsa match. As a result of the victory, the Trollers are now out of relegation trouble and still have a slight chance to quality for the Provincial Cup. Pegasus, on the other hand, has been officially relegated for quite some time.

On Sunday, at Kensington Park in Vancouver, Columbus-Clan FC kept its slim hopes of winning Group ‘B’ alive with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the AFC Leopards. After missing an early penalty kick, Joe Scigliano finished off a great cross by Craig Richards to give Columbus the half-time lead. Early in the second half, AFC tied things up on a goal by Kyle McDiarmid after applying a great deal of pressure on the Columbus goal. Second half substitute Lubo Acimovic restored Columbus’ lead on a fine individual effort. The Leopards refused to quit and came back with the second equalizer when Aaron McHardy converted a penalty kick into his team’s second goal. Late in the game, however, another substitute—Tiarnan King—beat two defenders before passing the ball to a wide-open Joe Scigliano who tucked the ball into the net for his second goal of the match, and 10th of the season. It should be noted that Scigliano is now in sole possession of the lead for the GOLDEN BOOT AWARD. The victory leaves Columbus in second place, 6 points behind Surrey United, while the Leopards’ chances of qualifying for the Province Cup are now substantially slimmer.

Finally, in a game played on Saturday at Cloverdale Athletic Park, Surrey United shut out the Metro-Ford Wolves 3-0. Shawn Blakeway gave Surrey the early lead when he took advantage of a poor clearance by a Metro-Ford defender. Soon thereafter, United goalkeeper, Paul Shepherd, made a great save on a powerful shot from Diaz Kambere to preserve his team’s lead. In the second half, Ryan Hopp scored Surrey’s second goal on a perfectly-flighted chip shot. Midfield ace Todd Stauber rounded out the scoring a few minutes later when he converted a 3-way passing play involving Hopp and Sean Crocker. As a result of the victory, United solidifies its lead in the Group ‘B’ standings, while the Wolves’ loss means that they now need a minor miracle to qualify for the Province Cup.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for its brilliant performance in defeating top-ranked ICSF Inter by a 3-1 score. As a result of the victory, Rino’s boys qualify for the Province Cup playdowns.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Burnaby Canadians’ goalkeeper TREVOR JONES for his superlative performance in earning a shutout in his team’s 1-0 victory over Sporting Club. Jones had to make at least five sensational saves to keep the very determined Sporting Club off the score sheet. As a result of his excellent performance, JONES will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2005-04-07. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Smells like something fishy coming out of that WestVan game, and it wasn't the fish and chips ;) .

Jinky, Khlasa finally got a keeper with them trying to avoid relegation, too little, too late, and still no finish up front.

Well we will see an all new Khalsa team in Div. 1 next year, some Hurricanes will help to clean house  .

Re: Azzi's Superlative Team & Player of the Week

WEEK #24–2005-03-28

Most VMSL teams were forced to play an Easter weekend double-header in order to solve the numerous problems that still existed prior to the weekend’s activities. Unfortunately, one of the issues remains unresolved as the standings in Group ‘A’ will attest. In fact, 3 teams are still in the running for the Group ‘A’ title: the rejuvenated Westside Rino, the Sapperton Rovers, and the slumping ICSF Inter. Whereas Westside and Sapperton have completed their regular schedule, ICSF still has a make-up game to play against Croatia SC. With Westside and Sapperton only one point ahead of ICSF, an Inter victory over Croatia will clinch the title for the Italian team, while an ICSF loss will force a playoff between Westside and Sapperton. A tie between ICSF and Croatia will further complicate matters as 3 teams will be tied for first place! In that case, goal difference in games played among the 3 tied teams will decide the Group ‘A’ winner. Once the Group ‘A’ winner has been declared, a playoff game against Surrey United—to decide the overall Premier Division title—will have to be played. As if that weren’t enough, the Imperial Cup issue has yet to be resolved as four teams are still in the running for that coveted title. All this as 8 VMSL teams are preparing themselves for the Province Cup playdowns! On the bright side of things, the last VMSL Province Cup slot was awarded to Sporting Club as a result of their 4-1 victory over Columbus-Clan FC.

In Group ‘B’ action, Surrey United started the weekend 6 points ahead of Columbus-Clan at the top of the standings. In other words, Surrey needed at least a point to clinch the group title. On Good Friday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, United faced an unmotivated and lackadaisical Pegasus FC and came away with a decisive 5-1 victory to put an end to the battle for first place in the Group ‘B’ table. After squandering a couple of great goal-scoring opportunities, Surrey took the lead at the 15th minute mark when Shawn Blakeway’s headed flick found fellow striker Dave Hleucka who, from the edge of the penalty area, chipped the ball over the Pegasus goalkeeper. Soon thereafter, Paul Dailly set up young Marcus Lindner for the tying goal. The goal seemed to inspire the home team and, as a result, 3 quick goals ensued. First, Justin Carvery’s speed saw him elude the offside trap as he burst through the Pegasus defence to score what proved to be the winning goal. Then, Clayton Dobbin stripped a Pegasus defender of the ball at the half way line, beat another defender and crashed a powerful low shot into the net. Shawn Blakeway then added Surrey’s fourth goal as he raced onto a long pass from defender Luke Ash before tucking the ball into the bottom corner of the Pegasus net. Dave Hleucka added United’s fifth goal in the second half as he rose magnificently to head home a Sean Crocker corner kick. As mentioned earlier, the victory clinches the Group ‘B’ title for Surrey United, the third such title in the last four years.

On Easter Sunday, Surrey United was back in action, this time against ICSF Inter. While United had already clinched the Group ‘B’ crown on Good Friday, the game had massive implications on ICSF who needed all 3 points to clinch the Group ‘A’ title. It was not surprising, therefore, that Inter got off to a flying start in its quest for an all-important victory. ICSF totally dominated the opening quarter of the match and opened the scoring at the 20th minute mark when Joseph Marrello hammered home a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Shortly thereafter, Brian Van Schagen almost added to the Inter lead as he shot rattled off the goalpost with the Surrey goalkeeper well beaten. The second half provided a totally different story as United took control of the match and finally tied things up at the 70th minute mark when defender Luke Ash out-jumped the entire Inter defence to head home Clayton Dobbin’s free kick. The goal served as a wake-up call for ICSF and the last part of the game saw the visitors pressing forward with a great deal of determination in search of the all-important goal. Late in the game Inter could easily have won the match as Brian Van Schagen and Mike Tempesta both missed golden goal-scoring opportunities. In the end, however, ICSF had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Inter must now beat Croatia SC in the final game of the regular season to clinch first place in Group ‘A’.

Westside Rino, who a few weeks ago was struggling near the bottom of the Group ‘A’ table, won its 4th and 5th consecutive game this past weekend to climb to the top of the standings. On Friday, Rino’s boys defeated fellow contenders Sapperton Rovers 3-1 after a well-played 90 minutes of action. Westside took the lead late in the first half when a critical Sapperton defensive error resulted in a penalty kick that young Steve Deblasio converted into the game’s first goal. Another youngster, Alex Kosanin scored what proved to be the winning goal midway through the second half as Sapperton was caught flat-footed in its efforts to get the equalizer. Keith Moore notched the insurance marker late in the game, just minutes before Robert Sing scored the Rovers’ lone goal. Three youngsters, Alex Kosanin, Jonathan Poli, and Steve Deblasio played exceptionally well for Westside, as did veteran defender Jason Small.

On Sunday, at Kensington Park, Westside Rino continued its amazing run with a 4-0 victory over a badly organized Khalsa Sporting Club. Westside rested a few of its regular starters and fielded several Under 21 players while Khalsa SC started the match with only 10 men. While the first half was rather uneventful and scoreless, the second half saw Westside come forward with a lot more determination and effort. Alex Kosanin capped off a fine individual performance by scoring twice in the second half, while John Chou and Steve Dickinson added singletons. For Khalsa SC, goalkeeper Chris Johnson and midfielder Ricky Manhas had strong games in a losing cause.

In the meantime, at Adanac Park, the Sapperton Rovers once again squandered a golden opportunity to rise to the top of the Group ‘A’ table as a result of a hard-fought 0-0 draw with the unpredictable Burnaby Canadians. The Canadians got off to a flying start, but Sapperton took over the reins of the match midway through the first half and was unlucky not to gain all 3 points. Midway through the first half, Emilio Bottiglieri rang a fierce shot off the goal post after a brilliant set-up by Matt Ormerod. Soon thereafter, veteran Burnaby goalkeeper Dan Penner made a magnificent save on a vicious 20-metre drive by Jeff Rogers. Penner, perhaps the best player on the pitch, again rose to the occasion late in the match as he deflected a close-range shot by Robert Sing. The tie leaves the Rovers tied for first place with Westside Rino in the Group ‘A’ table, one point ahead of ICSF Inter.

On Good Friday, at Burnaby Lake West, the Burnaby Canadians defeated the AFC Leopards 2-0 with Scott Walters and Darren Nott scoring the goals. Also on Good Friday, at Hastings Bowl, the Metro-Ford Wolves kept their faint hopes of making it to the Province Cup playdowns alive by virtue of a well-earned 3-1 decision over Columbus-Clan FC. Matthew Humphries, Andrew Veer, and Diaz Kambere scored the Metro-Ford goals, while Vince Peragine replied for Columbus. However, the Wolves’ hopes evaporated on Easter Sunday when Sporting Club also defeated Columbus-Clan by a 4-1 margin. The victory means that Sporting Club qualifies for the Province Cup by finishing one point ahead of Metro-Ford in the final league standings. Steve Dormer and Mike Gomes each scored twice for Sporting Club while Stefan Leslie notched the lone Columbus marker. Finally, also on Good Friday, ICSF Inter kept its hopes of winning the Group ‘A’ title alive by defeating Trollers FC by a 2-0 margin in a game played at Adanac Park. Tino Cucca and Brian Van Schagen scored the ICSF goals in the second half, while goalkeeper Dennis Kindel rose to the occasion by keeping the Trollers scoreless throughout the match.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for its brilliant performances in defeating the top-ranked Sapperton Rovers (3-1) and the lowly Khalsa SC (4-0). As a result of the victories, Rino’s boys have now risen to first place in the Group ‘A’ standings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sporting Club’s forward STEVE DORMER for his brilliant performance in the all-important match against Columbus-Clan FC. Dormer scored twice and set up a third goal in his team’s 4-1 victory, a victory that means Sporting Club qualifies for the Province Cup playdowns. As a result of his excellent performance, DORMER will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2005-04-14. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Re: Azzi's Superlative Team & Player of the Week

I take it from the above that a bunch of youngsters defeated Sapperton in Westside's great victory. Where were the veteran players or were they veteran youngsters doing the whipping? By next they will be veteran youngsters I suppose. Why didn't WAB put out his goon to even the score with all those youngsters?

Re: Azzi's Superlative Team & Player of the Week

that was our 5th and 6th league wins in a row...but who's counting.

4 of those 6 games were against teams that didn't even qualify for the provincials. 2 of those were against Division 1 teams. They Beat Sapperton who was without their top three players.

Westside does traditionally peak at the end of the season. My point is that they are no longer the powerhouse that dominated the league. Saying that, winning a side at the Premier level is not an easy task.....until they/you do save the gloating till then:rolleyes:

Re: Azzi's Superlative Team & Player of the Week

WEEK #25–2005-04-07

The Imperial Cup semi-finals were played this past weekend at Charles Best School’s new turf field in Coquitlam. The first game could have been billed as the “Italian derby” as ICSF Inter faced Columbus-Clan FC in a match that fully lived up to the pre-game expectations. With the score tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation time, ICSF was eventually able to win the game in overtime by a 4-2 score. The Columbus boys came out of the starting gate with fire in their bellies and totally dominated proceedings for the entire first half. The young and speedy Columbus forwards drove the Inter defenders to distraction as they created numerous golden goal-scoring opportunities. Unfortunately for Columbus, the chances were all squandered and the first half ended with a 0-0 score. In the second half ICSF started playing with more poise and counter-attacked much more effectively. In fact, at about the 55th minute mark, Andrew Corazza scored the first goal of the game taking advantage of a rather flat-footed Columbus defence. Soon thereafter, Corazza scored his second goal of the match and it looked like curtains for the frustrated Columbus squad. To make matters worse, Columbus’ Vince Peragine was ejected from the match about half way through the second half. At this point Inter probably relaxed a little too soon and, with only a couple of minutes left in regulation time, Carmine D’Onofrio unleashed a brilliant shot from well outside the penalty area that beat ICSF’s fine goalkeeper Dennis Kindel. Then, well into injury time, young Tyler Rosenlund almost miraculously tied things up on the last kick of regulation time with another amazing shot from long range. One would have thought that Columbus, despite playing with only 10 men, would have had the psychological advantage in the overtime. Instead, it was ICSF that totally controlled proceedings in extra time and scored twice to advance to the Imperial Cup final. Joseph Marrello—on a great set-up from Mike Tempesta—scored early in the second overtime period, and Brian VanSchagen rounded out the scoring late in the match. All in all, it was a very entertaining match for the numerous spectators.

The second game—between Croatia SC and the Sapperton Rovers—was far less exciting as Croatia, led by playing-coach Johnny Sulentic, fully deserved the 4-1 victory. Sapperton, missing 3 key players in its starting line-up, tried hard to defend right from the opening whistle. However, with Sulentic playing the game of his life, the Rovers were under severe pressure from the opening whistle. Sulentic opened the scoring at the 35th minute mark on an absolutely amazing free kick from 25 metres, a free kick that even Sapperton’s fine goalkeeper, Cory Breure, had no chance of stopping. The second half was a carbon copy of the first as Croatia continued to attack, while the Rovers were forced to defend desperately. Early in the second half, Sulentic tallied his second goal on a great pass from Ruben Castelblanco. Late in the match, Sulentic added his third and fourth goals on set-ups from Adrian Kekec and Aaron Keay. Kent Waechner finally put the Rovers on the scoresheet as he headed home Sapperton’s lone goal just before the final whistle. Croatia SC thus earns the right to play in the Imperial Cup final against ICSF Inter. Unfortunately for the Croatians, they will have to do without the services of Johnny Sulentic as he is leaving for Europe in the next few days to try out for Kaiserslautern of the German Bundesliga. The entire VMSL community wishes Johnny the best of luck in his endeavour.

On Tuesday evening, at Brand Rith Park in Tswwwassen, the VMSL All-Stars were unlucky to lose 4-2 to the Vancouver Whitecaps after an exciting 90 minutes of play. The game, played in front of about 1000 enthusiastic spectators, saw the VMSL All-Stars and the Whitecaps battle through a scoreless first half. In the second half, the Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Jason Jordan. The All-Stars, not to be denied, rallied back tenaciously and were rewarded when Chris Clarke and Johnny Sulentic scored to tie the game at 2-2. Unfortunately, Steve Frazao (a VMSL player with Sporting Club) set up two very late goals by Steve Klein and Said Ali to give the Whitecaps the victory.

On Thursday evening, at Burnaby Lake West, ICSF Inter clinched the Group ‘A’ title in the Premier Division by defeating Croatia SC 3-1 in what might very well be a preview of the Imperial Cup final. Croatia, playing without several starters, took the early lead on a goal by young Adrian Kekec, but Inter rallied back and scored twice before the halftime whistle as Andrew Corazza and Sean Dinsley were able to get past a rather flat-footed Croatia defence before slotting the ball behind Adel Massoud. In the second half, Sheldon Maistry added to the margin of victory as he scored Inter’s third goal. ICSF will now play Surrey United for the Premier Division title. The game is scheduled for Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. at Kensington Park in Vancouver.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its excellent performances in defeating Columbus-Clan FC 4-2 in the Imperial Cup semi-final and Croatia SC 3-1 in the last regular season game. As a result of the victories, ICSF finds itself in the enviable position of being in both VMSL finals: the Imperial Cup (against Croatia SC) and the League championship (against Surrey United).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Croatia SC’s forward JOHNNY SULENTIC for his amazing performance in the Imperial Cup semi-final against Sapperton Rovers. Sulentic scored all 4 goals in his team’s 4-1 victory over the Rovers. As a result of his excellent performance, SULENTIC will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2005-04-21. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.
