I got Abby in that one too. Metro ford obviously the favourite but honestly a lot of bitch tits on that team. Find their highlights alarming. If you aren’t Charlie Adams there is no excuse for it. Although in 2022 they are big boned and identify as skinny so I could have this wrong.

There were a few eye-catching upsets in the Opening Round, however, the big dogs still remain very much alive. Further upsets in the quarter finals, though, would really set the cat amongst the pigeons as we pair down to the final four...

R16 - 5/8; Overall 5/8

Completely Baseless Predictions - Men's A Cup Quarter Finals

FC Tigers Vancouver (FVSL) v Nanaimo United (VISL)
As expected, Tigers crushed Surrey at more or less a walk. Albeit, it was briefly one all after goalkeeper Lucas Strauts handled a back pass and Surrey were able to force the ball over the line following the ensuing indirect freekick. The parity did not last long, as Tigers banged in a pair of goals in quick succession to lead 3-1 at halftime and the second frame was one way traffic. Farivar Torabi bagged a brace, and all of Tigers flair players got a chance to get into the mood for this tournament. The performance was dominant, but it did not reveal anything that we did not already know about Tigers - namely that they are the best team in the FVSL. Perhaps their next encounter will be more revealing, as they get set to take on a good Nanaimo side who battled to a 2-1 win over VISL rivals Vic West in their opener. Now the Island side must travel to the Mainland for an encounter with a side that has its eyes solely focused on winning this thing. Recent finals against Abbotsford and Whitecaps U19 were decent tests for Tigers, but, realistically, while winning the Pakenham and Soccer City Cups were nice, Tigers always knew that regardless of the outcome they would be in this tournament. Now, though, one bad day at the office and the season ends with a whimper. So, safe to say the pressure is on for Tigers in earnest for likely the first time this season. They will, of course, remain massive favourites, but Nanaimo are a stubborn side, capable of grinding out results. While there is every chance Tigers come storming out of the block and cruise to another comfortable win, If Nanaimo can cause Tigers some problems, it will be interesting to see how the FVSL champs cope with a taste of adversity.

Abbotsford United (FVSL) v Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves (VMSL)
The biggest upset of the Opening Round was definitely an undermanned Abbotsford side heading to the Island and coming from behind to knock off VISL Champions Lakehill after extra time. After looking at half time as though they might just let this one go, Abbotsford found another gear in the second period and flipped the score line on its head. Lakehill battled back late to knot things back up, but an early goal in extra time was enough for Abby to hold on for the win. That result gets them home field for their quarterfinal, however, Coquitlam are likely just as pleased not to have to go to the Island. Metro Ford advanced with one of the less flashy results of the opening round, a 1-0 win over league rivals Inter. This result continued Coquitlam's return to form this season and has to have them eyeing a potential shot at Tigers in the semis. Of course after beating the odds against a Lakehill side that would have had similar plans last week, Abby have to be thinking they can earn one more chance against the team that has replaced them at the summit of the FVSL. It was a skeleton crew on the Island for United, but perhaps playing at home will have the cavalry coming over the hill. Basso et al at will be the favourites, even on the road, just based on the classic VMSL/FVSL history, but maybe another Abby upset might well set up an all FVSL semi-final, which would be a first, at least in the modern era.

Rino's VSC Coastal (VMSL) v Bays United Liquor Plus (VISL)
After becoming the first VISL team to win on the Mainland in the A-Cup since they themselves did it in 2015, Bays United earned the opportunity to do it all over again in the quarters when they head to South Surrey to take on Coastal. Coastal made short work of the last Island side they welcomed, dusting Cowichan 6-1 in their opener. It was a coming out party for Taylor Richardson, as the winger stole the show, netting a hattrick and putting this one out of reach by halftime. Talisman Jake Starheim got in on the act as well and, after a successful season in the VMSL, Coastal have to be thinking that maybe, just maybe, this is there year. They have been close before, and there is still a long way to go, but they have the look of a team that might be starting to believe. They would still have the super heavyweights of BB5 and Tigers likely in their way and Bays certainly will not rollover for them, with leading marksman Patrick Nelson capable of winning a game by himself. However, there are some tasty possibilities ahead if Coastal can get through this game and, at home, they definitely have to be favourites.

BB5 United CCB (VMSL) v FC Faly (FVSL)
Despite being pushed all the way by their local rival, Hurricanes, reigning champions BB5 were able to hold them off an progress to the quarters. A different sort of challenge awaits now, as they will welcome a plucky, young Faly side to Newton Athletic. It is another VMSL against FVSL grudge match, after there were no teams from those two leagues drawn together in the opening round. Faly have some interesting young pieces, not the least of which is striker Sairoob Sairoob, who was the star man in their 3-1 win over Langley. Still, the key word their is "young" and some of that inexperience showed when Faly made hard work of getting through their opener, despite playing with an extra man for the better part of an hour. If they afford the current holders the same quarter as they gave Langley, it will not end well for the North Shore turned Valley side. BB5 had a battle on their hands in the first round against Soolsma and co, but leading scorer Nic Morello continued his strong season and provided a brace that helped get them over the line with a 3-2 success. It was just another example of how many weapons BB5 have that on a night where they keep Morello's partner in crime, Caleb Clarke, off the scoresheet, they still concede three goals. There is no denying that Faly are well coached and will surely have a game plan for this game. That game plan likely involves screaming at the referees, a favourite pass time for the Faly technical area. If Faly can hang around, maybe one of their ambitious up-and-comers can pot a goal or two to take this one to penalties. This would be a startling upset, though, and there is an equally good chance that BB5 bag a couple early and run away with this one.

BB5 4-2 Faly FT(AET)

Quite the game. For all the energy and pace from Faly they did not create near as many chances as BB5 over the 120 minutes. It was quite the ride seeing which way this one was going to go.

There were about 4 sets of cameras filming the game so there will no doubt be plenty of opportunities for everyone to judge for themselves whether or not the right team won on the night.

Fair play to the Faly players...not sure I would survive a full season under the Faly technical staff's unique "enthusiasm" on the touchline...
