Not that it would have necessarily been more ideal, but I am told that the league offered to let you play the Cup Final mid-week on a day of your choosing. Any insight on why you would opt not to take them up on that to be at least fresher than having played literally the day before?
.

Wow. That is blatantly incorrect and I am hoping that your source was just speculating. We WERE offered to play the provincial Game Friday and the League Final Cup game Sunday at PM Town Center as an option giving us one day rest.

  • It was only an option on the Wednesday just before the game there was no time to check player schedules whereas I had 19 confirmed for Saturday since it had been on the calendar for 7 months.
  • We had already booked Sunday (immediately after provincial draw) with our Club as Friday was not available short notice.
  • We won a Bradner Cup on a midweek NON-Cup day once, it was tragic as some guy gets out of his car at 90 mins and walks over, shakes your hand and hands you a trophy. Not exactly a cup final experience... my guys deserved a Cup Final Day with all the fanfare that is involved. Thomas does a very good job of hosting a cup final IMO and its worth being there.

Anyhow enough about the scheduling, shite happens and we had a crap weather year that compounded things.

That's the same URL I posted in this thread on Saturday.

Essentially the BC Soccer website displays mobile at a set width which cocks up the display of the embedded bracket. As a result you need to go directly to the stack sports site to the view the bracket in its full scrolling glory.

@suburbanator ,
Don't be scared homie. Winning your league cup is nice but the provincial cup is a little nicer although you have to beat some real good opposition along the way.

Can the real FVSL please stand up??

Third best in A cups and the fourth or fifth best in B cups! Let's go fellas, I like rooting for the underdogs ;)

I was on the wrong side of a few close run encounters, in that first round, so I will need to try and make up for it now that we have hit the Round of 16. The seeded teams and those that were lucky enough to draw byes now enter the competition which should, in theory, bring even another level to the quality of play. All five leagues lost teams in the Preliminary Round and, since nobody emerged unscathed, that means we still have a solid variety of teams which always adds to the fun!

Completely Baseless Predictions
Men’s B Keith Millar Provincial Cup

Preliminary Round: 3/8
Overall: 3/8

First Round Proper:

Abbotsford United B (FVSL)
v Hellas FC (VISL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Abbotsford Secondary, Abbotsford
This match up seems to be perhaps more in the balance than it would otherwise appear. After enjoying home field in the first round and dispatching Bacardi from the Burnaby league 3-1, Hellas now face quite the trek from the Island to the far side of the Fraser Valley. Fortunately, rumours are swirling that Abbotsford might not be at full strength do to non-football related commitments. Certainly the FVSL's top entrant will be hoping to having leading goal scorer Tej Paul Kullar and his 15 goals in their lineup, ideally alongside 9 goal man, Justin Sekhon. Perhaps more importantly though, they will hope goalkeeper Arturo Silva is available for selection, after he posted six clean sheets during the season this year, finishing second in the Golden Gloves race. At full strength certainly Abby would be clear favourites against a travelling Hellas side that nabbed the VISL's bonus spot as a league runner up. However, it will likely come down to just what kind of roster United are able to field.

Impero Calcio (BMSL) v Shaheen FC (VMSL) - Saturday 5:30pm @ Burnaby Lake West #1, Burnaby
Call this one the Match of the Round as perennial Burnaby Men's Soccer League winners Impero enter the fray to begin their 2019 Provincial Cup journey. The Italian based outfit always seem to have at least a round or two in them and there is the tantilizing prospect of them meeting their old nemesis Sierra, who jumped ship from the BMSL to the VMSL this season, in a semi final. That would involve both those teams reaching that stage of course, and that will be no easy task it what looks to be the hardest section of the draw. Four league champions remain in the top half, while only one (or perhaps one and a half depending on how you classify Red Devils) are still in play in the bottom. Shaheen took care of business in rather straight forward fashion in their opener, brushing aside Mission 4-1. They will face tougher task now though, as BMSL champions Impero will certainly consider themselves to have a shot at winning it all this year. There no secret who the danger man is for the Burnaby side, as Lucas Sweda led Impero and the league as a whole with 19 goals over what appears to be just 14 games, as it seems that a pair of make up games for Impero were not played once it was clear that they are once again won the BMSL Division 1 title. Shaheen are tough customers themselves though, and will be looking to once more hoist the trophy that they last won in 2011, on their way up to Division 1. They will be playing another season in Division 2 next year, but, the last two teams to win this tournament, Greencaps and Strikers, both went on to earn promotion to the VMSL's second tier the next season. Shaheen will be hoping to follow a similar path which sets this one up nicely. It could easily go either way, but I will give the league winners the edge.

AC Richmond (RASA) v Westside FC Sierra (VMSL) - Friday 8:30pm @ Minoru Oval, Richmond
Another top clash pit the Richmond Adult Soccer Association Premier champions against the VMSL's Division 2B winners, Sierra. As mentioned ahead of the last round, it is a case of putting the icing on top of a season where the VMSL new boys have already achieved their goal of promotion to Division 1. The first game of what is ostensibly a bonus round for Sierra went well as they cruised past Langley Dynamo 4-0. With potential tasty quarter final and semi final matches against rivals Serbia and Impero, Sierra should certainly be motivated. However, they are on the road once more, but this time is to Richmond where they will be the best the RASA has to offer. AC Richmond were the best of what ended up as a three horse race in the Richmond league. It is always tough to judge the relative strength of all the leagues compared to one another, but fellow RASA side, Graduates, who were one of the other two teams keeping up with AC at the top of the league, made light work of VMSL side Meralomas in their opener. That should give Richmond some decent belief that they can hold their own against one of the "big boys" in this tournament. Sierra, though, will not likely be intimidated by anyone's resume being a league winner themselves, so expect two condifent teams to lock horns here. Where Sierra might have a slight edge though is in the goal scoring department. Brian Stewart notched 18 goals for them in 22 games while AC Richmond will counter leading goal scorer Tawfiq Jamal who only managed ten this season. AC will hope their league best defense can hold Sierra at bay long enough for them to take control of this match, but if Sierra can get on the board early, it does not seem likely that Richmond will have enough fire power to fight their way back into this one.

FC Serbia United (VMSL) v Surrey United SC (FVSL) - Sunday 2:30pm @ Burnaby Lake West #3, Burnaby
A disappointing end to the season for Serbia saw them miss out on promotion from 2B when they lost what amounted to a winner-takes-all match against rivals Sierra. The blow is perhaps softened by the fact that, at the time the entrants from the VMSL were confirmed to BC Soccer, they were in a position to be seeded. Additionally, should they win this one, they could well be handed a chance at revenge against Sierra, so there is plenty to play for here. Surrey United made short work of Richmond All Black in their Provincial Cup debut, posting a 3-0 win, but this will be a significant step up from the fourth place RASA side, despite All Black's pedigree as playoff winners and former Provincial Champions. The Serbian strike force of Ramsey Alfantazi and Pedro Vega combined for 40 league goal for the VMSL side, which is only five fewer than Surrey managed as a team all year. Incidently, Alfantazi and Vega were both sent off in that crucial loss to Sierra, so discipline can be an issue with this Serbia side. That being said, assuming they are able to keep level heads, the Burnaby based side are surely favourites in this one.

Gorge Us-Guys (VISL) v NK Hrvat (VMSL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Hampton Turf, Victoria
Indeed, the cup wins just seem to keep on coming for NK Hrvat. Despite a rather unimpressive mid-table finish, Hrvat simply refuse to lose in knockout situations. After claiming some big VMSL scalps en route to the final, it took a shootout for them to relinquish their claim to the Div. 2 cup. Then a home draw sees them find the decisive marker in extra time to get past a strong FVSL side in Aldergove 2-1. Now though, this is set to be a different kettle of fish altogether. Hrvat must go on the road to the Island to play VISL treble winners Gorge Us-Guys. Gorge went undefeated during league play, posting a 12-5-0 record to win Division 3B and promotion to Division 2. They also won an additional four games to lift the Challenge Cup, competed for by all Division 3 sides. However, their most impressive feat was winning another four matches to claim the McGavin Cup, which is open to teams from all divisions, and to do so they had to beat a pair of Division 1 sides in Bays United and Gorge FC. Clearly this Gorge team is the real deal. Leading goal scrorer Jordan French had 23 goals in all competitions, including 15 in league play, while his support staff of John Bakowski and Tyler Ostapovich chipped in with 14 and 12 goals respectively. Nothing is ever impossible, and Hrvat clearly seem to be cloaked in some sort of divine cup magic, but this would easily be their biggest upset of all if they should pull it off on the road to the Island. Meanwhile, Gorge are the top team in the bottom half of the draw meaning that they will play at home throughout the competition until the final which they will hope to represent the VISL in up Island in Nanaimo.

Abbotsford SA Red Devils (FVSL) v Graduates FC (RASA) - Saturday 6:00pm @ Abbotsford Secondary, Abbotsford
Perhaps this one would have been slightly more straightforward had Graduate not absolutely smashed Meraloma 5-1 in their opening fixture. Now the Richmond League Cup champions must journey out to the Fraser Valley to play FVSL 2B winners Red Devils. That being said, despite having two distinct pools in Division 2, the FVSL only awarded a single league winner, Abbotsford United B, while Red Devils will have to playoff for their chance to be promoted against the second bottom side from Division 1, Abbotsford United U21. Does that make them league winners or not? You decide. Regardless of the logistics of it, Red Devils had a top season this year, lead by FVSL Division 2 co-Golden Boot winner David Vanderhoek and his 15 league goals. How that matches up against the third place team from the RASA is tough to tell though, especially considering how good they looked in the Preliminary Round. Of course they too possess a threat up front in the form of 14 goal man Lucas Jacob. This one is most definitely a toss up, but I will give it to the home side.

Metropolitan FC (VMSL) v Euro FC (BMSL) - Sunday 6:00pm @ University Hill, Vancouver
Seeing rivals Strikers lose to Euro 1-0 in the first round will likely have Metropolitan all the more upset that they could not find a way to beat them to the VMSL's 2A title. Students certainly showed their class in their Division 2 Cup winning campaign, particularly as they found a way to win on penalties despite being reduced to nine men before the 90 minutes were up. Leading scorer Masumi Turnbull will look to power Metro to the summit of yet another knockout tournament once more relying on the stellar goalkeeping of Cup Final MVP Derek Monkman. Euro will have a taste for things having already knocked out the first place team from Metro's division in Strikers, but down the stretch Students were arguably the best that 2A had to offer, having lost only one game since November 11.

Port Moody Titans (FVSL) v Mudiavocat FC (BMSL) - Sunday 6:00pm @ Trasolini Turf, Port Moody
Following Fraser Valley Blue Devils losing the FVSL's Presidents Cup final to Langley Dynamo, Port Moody were able to slip into the final FVSL Provincial Cup berth. It was a rather humdrum campaign for Titans as they finished fourth in their pool, well back of the top three as well as the top three in the competing pool, all six of whom represented the FVSL's other entrants to this competition. With no standout players to speak of, this might well just be a "happy to be here" assignment for Port Moody. However, their opponents, Mundiavocat are not exactly a perennial powerhouse themselves, so Titans will likely fancy their chances in this one, especially at home. That being said, Port Moody is not exactly the world's toughest commute for Burnaby based Mundi, so they will be confident of fielding a strong squad. Arguably Prospect Lakers, the teams they edged on penalties in their opener, were a better side on paper than Port Moody, so the lawyers will likely have their tails up coming into this one. A third place finish in the BMSL and no stars of their own to speak of either though means these two side look well matched. Expect both to fancy this one, but I will tip the side that already has a win to their name in this competition to stay hot.

Around the Grounds in the Provincial B Cup

AC Richmond 1-0 Sierra
With very limited Friday night action to choose from I headed out to see the RASA First Division Champions play a top Division 2 VMSL side. There wasn't much to choose between the teams in the first period, with Sierra probably shading things. They looked to have more of the ball and were were getting into dangerous areas than their opponents. Still, they could really only muster half chances and never really troubled the Richmond keeper, though one speculative effort from distance did have the goalie scrambling briefly. Sierra certainly looked to have the best player on the field with their winger, #7, who was very useful with the ball and a constant headache for the Richmond defenders. I thought I might have recognized him as a former Campo player but couldn't say for sure. Any edge that Sierra might have had almost evaporated right on half time when a Richmond corner dropped in the area and their midfielder looked sure to smash it home, until he fully shifted on it and we went into the break scoreless.

Sierra continued to look the more likely team to score into the second half as they had several early shots, but could not find a goal. That was to prove costly just past the hour mark as a swift Richmond counter attack was poorly cleared and on a second effort was deflected into the net to give the home team the advantage. Sierra nearly had an immediately reply but saw their effort hit the crossbar. As you might expect it was Sierra pressing the rest of the way with Richmond looking to put things out of reach on the counter. The had a couple of looks to salt it away as well, but could not find a second. The temperature also started to rise with refereeing decisions being hotly debated both ways. In the end though, despite throwing the kitchen sink at it, Sierra were made to play for not taking their chances as Richmond advance.

Took in the match as well. Have to say, if that was two league champions then the quality of the B Cup this year is not going to be good. That first half in particular was dreadful.

Ya it definitely had real beer league feel to it. Especially the Richmond bench who were well into the pints, screaming at the refs and generally appearing to have too many cooks in the kitchen when it came to who was actually coaching. On the other side once Sierra went behind they spent an inordinate amount of effort trying to draw a penalty call.
