Nothing like a bus dropping you off at the pitch. 2.5 hours before the game. It was really the only option. Heck of a long pregame. White spot was on point

Around the Grounds in the Provincial A Cup

Port Moody 2-1 Westcastle
The young Island side came as advertised: plucky and short staffed. Anchoring the back line was one time UBC man and Pacific FC trialist Mark Cottrell, but other than that the Victoria boys were brimming with youth. Their main threat was a pacey winger who wore #9 and operated down the left hand side. His speed took Port Moody by surprise and had a look to open the scoring inside the opening few minutes but he put his near post effort the wrong side of the post. They would have the ball in the net after ten minutes after the second phase of a corner kick was recycled into the area, however, an organized Port Moody back line had quickly stepped up to leave the Westcastle strikers offside. The VISL side had definitely served notice, though, that they were not here just to make up the numbers. The Gunners were FVSL champions for a reason and were by no means on the back foot as they had the ball in the net themselves a few minutes later, but this time the referee determined there was a foul in the build up and chalked this one off as well. Westcastle were playing with a high press, but after 20 or so minutes they could no longer sustain it. From this point Port Moody took the game over a did open the scoring for real on 25 minutes when they did good work to reach the end line before a ball was cut back to a wide open Cole Almond who smashed it home from close range. The Gunners continued to see the majority of the ball for the rest of the opening half, with Westcastle looking to release their blazing fast wingers on counter attack, but there was no further scoring before the break.

Westcastle were indeed light on options from the bench and this was brought sharply into view when Cottrell's centreback partner pulled up with what looked like a groin problem just minutes after the restart. They were forced to bring on their only outfield substitute and he was not a defender, so this led to a make shift back line. With Westcastle still trying to establish just who was playing where, Port Moody nearly took instant advantage when FVSL Golden Boot winner Graeme Meers labelled a shot for the top corner only to be denied by a fantastic diving save from the Westcastle keeper, tipping it over the bar at full stretch. The legs looked to be getting heavy for the Island lads, but then, out of almost nothing, they were offered a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty. After latching onto a long through ball on one of their counter attacks, the Westcastle forward was dribbling across the top of the area and took the chance to go down. He was definitely looking for the contact, and the decision was one that you have seen given, but also waived away. On this occasion the call went the way of the VISLers and they made no mistake, firing past former former SFU man Richard Meister in the Port Moody goal to level things up. That parity was almost fleeting though as on Port Moody's next attack the Westcastle keeper got it all wrong as the ball embarrassingly bounced over him, leaving Meers with an unguarded net. The Westcastle defenders scrambled back and did enough to force Meers to get off a rushed finish which rolled agonizing across the face of the goal, just about on the goal line, with no Gunner able latch onto it until it was past the far post! The penalty had given Westcastle some life and the teams were back to trading punches now. Port Moody were becoming increasingly frustrated with themselves and with the referee, to whom they were beginning to devote entirely too much energy. With 20 minutes to go the talented Mark Talisuna burst forward from the Gunners midfield with a fantastic individual run that deserved a goal, however, his near post finish was well saved. Fortunately for the home side they did not have to wait long for salvation as five minutes later Meers showed his quality and his importance to this team. He latched onto the ball at the top of the area, back to goal, and, with a classic strikers move, rolled Cottrell before finishing on the turn into the roof of the net; a very classy finish. You would have though that would likely finish off Westcastle, but the Island side still had a few final death throws. With ten minutes to go a harmless looking counter attack by a lone, isolated winger saw the kid find another gear to leave the Port Moody defenders in the dust and beat Meister at his near post, but his finish struck the woodwork before being scrambled out for a corner. The ensuing set piece was swung into the back post where it was the big man in goal for Port Moody's turn to get things all wrong as he punched at air allowing the ball to reach the Westcastle attacker who turned it on goal but it was blocked by the defender on the post. There was a big shout for handball by that defender, and it did look like the ball made contact with his arm, however, this time the referee was not interested. He also waived away a halfhearted injury time appeal for a penalty as PoMo held on for the win. It was a solid result and they were likely the better team on the day, but they will certainly need to be much better than this if they plan on making a deep run in the tournament.

Croatia 4-1 Langley
Right from the off Langley looked as though they were at less than full strength for this encounter with no sign of Brett Wiens to lead the line nor Andrew Hicks in goal. In fact, the team that took the pitch at Burnaby lake was largely unrecognizable to the one that played in the Provincial Final last season. Croatia were controlled this one just about from the first whistle, though one cause for concern was their goalkeeper who looked suspect and certainly did not appear to have safe hands. A few early half chances for Langley would turn into minor adventures for the lad but, fortunately for him, the FVSL side never really had occasion to test him on the night. In fact Langley sat very deep and were happy to concede possession to Croatia. The VMSLers were in control but struggled to break the Valley boys down, although they did not appear to be in much of a hurry to find a way to goal which made for a rather dull first half hour or so in this one. About ten minutes before half time David Malamura found himself one on one with a defender at the top of the area and opted to try his luck. The shot was not particularly powerful, but it took a large defection and found the back of the net to open the scoring. From this point on there was almost a sense of inevitability about the result, with Langley appear almost resigned to their fate. Before half time Colin Jacques would time his run to beat the Langley back line and link up with a nice through-ball to spring himself on a breakaway. He made no mistake with his finish and it was 2-0 at the interval.

The half time break did little to spark Langley as they were flat and quiet coming out for the start of play. Colin Jacques almost found his send of the night practically straight from the restart as he knifed through the Langley defenders and was only denied by a sharp save via the goalkeepers outstretched foot. Eventually Langley would create a chance off of a freekick and this finally gave them a bit of a spark. They would have a few half chances over the next few minutes as the match seemed to, just briefly, hang in the balance. However, a lovely build up which included a Croatia player in an offside position leaving a through-ball for an onrushing winger to cross found Malamura at the back post with the net gaping for his second of the night. This goal killed the game and Croatia looked like scoring on every attack the rest of the way. They would be denied chances to extend their lead by the post and by a fantastic reflex save from the Langley keeper on the goal line after his defenders had left him for dead. Croatia would eventually add a fourth with less than 15 minutes to go and then things got a little spicy with a few rashes challenges knowing that the game was over as a contest. Croatia would scramble away a late free kick after their goalkeeper once again made a hash of things as they looked to preserve their clean sheet. Langley must certainly be ruing the fact that they were not able to test the Croatian keeper further in this one. The FVSL boys would pick up a consolation marker and break up the shutout bid in injury time, slotting directly from another free kick. That was all they would get though as they season came to a close while Croatia are set for a showdown with the team who they beat to win the VMSL title, Rino's.

Game was always slated for Sunday so, assuming the whether sorts itself out, it should stay as scheduled I would think.
