In the other semifinal out in Coquitlam, West Van defeated Metro Ford 2-0. Crouch with two goals in the second half and him with the other two up front were a lot for them to handle. Mike Franks had an outstanding game for them. We had a sending off for someone having a beer on the sideline. This will be our third final this decade I believe.

After a strong two opening rounds I completely struck out on the semis. Both semis were toss ups, to be fair, and evidently I came down on the wrong side of the coin. I will try to salvage things for yet another all VMSL final.

Completely Baseless Predictions
Men’s Masters A Deryl Hughes Provincial Cup

Semi Finals: 0/2
Overall: 7/10

Final:

PCOV M-A (VMSL) v West Van FC (VMSL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Merle Logan #1, Nanaimo
It is once again an all VMSL final as the league will win its 11th straight Masters A title this weekend. Not since 2008 when UVic Alumni lifted the trophy has the VMSL been separated from this particular piece of hardware. This season's combatants for the final had decidedly different domestic seasons. West Van were in the title hunt until Metro Ford pulled out of reach down the stretch while PCOV had a rather blase start to the season that saw them threaten to flirt with the relegation conversation until their pulled up their socks and made a charge to qualify for Provincials. In the end, despite finishing the season strongly with two wins and a draw, that was not enough to qualify them for this post season competition automatically. They were guaranteed a chance to playoff against three time winner of this trophy, and finalists last season, Westside FC, however, they rendered a playoff unnecessary by reaching the final of the VMSL's Masters A Cup. It was there that they faced this very same West Van side and came in as underdogs against the North Shore boys. On the day though, despite West Van likely shading things, the PCOV goal led a charmed life and the only goal was an absolute thunderbolt from the Portuguese's Brian Gebbie. That win then handled PCOV a bye in the first round of Provincials and when their tournament did get underway, they found themselves quickly behind 2-0 to a motivated Port moody side. The had clawed one back when Port Moody were contentiously, or at least contentiously from their perspective, reduced to ten men. From that point PCOV found their equalizer and a late winner to book a trip to Cowichan for the semis. It was another close run affair on the Island, one that needed more than 90 minutes to decide, but it was once again PCOV finding the crucial goal and now they are headed back to the Island for the big dance. West Van, meanwhile, shook off their loss in the domestic cup final and sucked up the extra game they were forced to play in Provincial competition as a result. The once Tollers were handed a tricky opener against defending Provincial champions Inter EDC, another team that needed a late charge just to make it into this tournament and another team that had edged past West Van late in the season. The North Shore side had their revenge, winning 3-2, before having it all their way when they went out to face FVSL champions Surrey United in the quarters, winning 5-1. That set up a titanic semi final match up against VMSL champions Coquitlam and, in another nip and tuck affair, the Amblesiders found another gear in the second half and ran out 2-0 winners. So now another chance for revenge, as West Van look to pay PCOV back for ostensibly absconding with their VMSL league cup.

That final went totally against the previous league meetings this season in which the teams had split the points in a 3-3 barn burner before West Van smashed their Portuguese opponents 5-0 in the reverse fixture. This begs the question, who will be able to dictate this final encounter? You would have to think if PCOV are to emerge victorious they will be looking for yet another close match as West Van look to have more fire power. The likes of Corey Birza and Jesse Fetterley saw the North Shore boys score 17 more goals that PCOV this season and finish with a +26 goal difference to PCOV's -3. Still, with the Gomes brothers, Mark and Mike, in form for PCOV and leading scorer Steve Frazao among their ranks, the Portuguese will hardly be backing down. Anything can happen in a one-off final, as PCOV already proved when they waltzed away with the VMSL Masters A trophy while West Van looked on. However, I will have to go with the stats here. West Van tick all the boxes and should be even more motivated given what happened last time these two sides play. PCOV have shown their mettle, no doubt, and it has been an incredible pair of cup runs. They would be deserved winners should they emerge victorious once more, but that would mean lightning has struck twice. True, the odds of lightning hitting the same place twice are actually much more probable than people think, but I don't believe we will see it happen in Nanaimo.
