Back at it for my 14th year at South Delta and as always REALLY looking forward to working with the school team. We will have a decent team this year and we will be pushing for our 10th straight Provincials which would tie a record that North Delta set through the 90s and early 00s. We have no grade 12 starters.......4 grade 9s, 1 grade 10, and the rest grade 11s. We have 2 grade 12s on the team so we don't have a lot of the complete senior leadership but a good group of kids ranging from silver to metro........

So far, we have played several exhibition games and had our first league game yesterday.

Fleetwood 0 SD 1
McMath 2 SD 0
Hugh Boyd 0 SD 3
Delta 0 SD 3

Big game against Panorama Ridge on Monday as they will likely be the top team in our league this year. They pounded us 3-0 in the Valleys last year and have the majority of their team returning. They are well coached and definitely am looking forward to the game.

We play Elgin Park on Wednesday and they will be good as they have been in recent years. They have lost a couple of outstanding individuals but they will have more than enough talent to do well in the league. On Thursday we head off to Victoria to play in the 24 team UVIC Umbro Classic. This is always a good tournament and there are some quality teams there.

Go Devils!

Hey....I too am looking forward to this season. It is only my second year as coach for the Holy Cross girls team. We have a good mix of players ranging from grade 8 to 12. Three metro players, lots of gold and silver level and even a house player. Most of the strength is in the grade 11 group. We've had a good start so far.In two exhibition games we came out victorious.
Holy Cross 3 - Surrey Christian 0
Holy Cross 3 - St. John Brebeuf 1

And our first two league games,we managed to turn the tables on teams that beat us by 7 and 6 goals.
Holy Cross 0 - BC AA Champions 2009 Burnsview 0.....both teams had great chances! They beat us 7-1 last year.
Holy Cross 4 - Sands 0...felt good for the returning girls as they beat us 6-0 and tied 1-1 in a game where if we'd won we would've finished second and had an easier run in the Fraser valleys.
But...this coming week is what our year is all about as the BC Catholics are held at Archbishop Carney school in Coquitlam and we're trying to better our fourth place finish from last year. Hopefully the weather will be decent.
Coaching girls is sure trying on a guys patience though.....thank heaven for Sailor Jerry!!!

Cheers!

Scotty...you coach at Holy Cross and that's your avatar???

You're taking the piss....I can only assume. I'm guessing Scottyshell doesn't pass this information out to his players.....

Scottyshell, can you change your avatar to a Catholic Cross? Cheers.

SD 1 Panorama Ridge 0 - A very competitive game and fortunately we ended up on the good side of the win/loss column. They have some good players but have better players who aren't allowed to play at this point. If those girls play, this team will be very good.....similar to Elgin Park last year. They are well-coached and it was an enjoyable game to coach.

SD 5 Elgin Park 3 - We have never been in a game like this........never. We rarely give up 3 goals in a game and it is even more rare that we score 5 goals in a game. Elgin started the game 2 players short. We scored two goals within the first 15 minutes. Their 2 other players arrived right after that and we had already put our second group of players on the field(21 players today). They scored a goal within 5 minutes of this as they picked up the tempo and our players kept dropping and dropping. After the goal was scored, we made 8 substituations(back 4, 2 center midfielders, 2 strikers) and after Elgin kept up the pressure we held them at bay and then took over again for the last 6 or 7 minutes of the half.

We looked comfortable in the second half as we went up 3 - 1 on a set piece from a corner........then 4 - 1 after creating a turnover in the final third. Substitutions made again........Then Elgin went down to 10 players as one girl was injured and they scored on a free-kick that our back-up goalie would love to have back again. We were reeling a bit and Elgin scored again with about 7 or 8 minutes left on another one the back-up goalie would love to have back. There is a pattern here. Put starters back in again and we replied well by scoring on a penalty kick after a handball. Elgin has good athletes and are tough. With a full roster, they will be a tough opponent. We found that out today with a depleted roster. Well done to Elgin and their coaches for a very competitive game.

We head to Victoria tomorrow for the annual UVIC Spring Classic. I love these tournaments so every player gets equal time and of course the bonding.

Go Devils!

Is girls high school soccer a more competitive or ... organized or ... I don't know what, in comparison to boys? I just know a lot of boys who are "elite" play it to TTP with their buddies. I just wonder if girls is different?

Good luck fella's.

Judging by our game yesterday in the BC Catholics vs archrival St.Thomas More....girls soccer is very competitive...trouble is whether you have a true senior (grade 11 & 12's) or a mixed (grade 8 -12) team is the only difference. You may find your juniors (8-10) carry your team depending on what level they play outside of school. As it turned out we did lose a hard fought game after allowing them to get a 2-0 in the first half. Halves were only 30mins due to teams playing two games a day and the mixed age groups. The final score was 3-2 as the penalty shot awarded for a stumble over a downed body was the difference. Still playing for 3rd place overall tomorrow...hopefully the rain will let up and it will be warmer (no SLEET showers like today). Playing Notre Dame.....hmmmm...another rival!!

Cheers!

ps:no...the girls didn't wear their bikinis today!

SD 1 Mount Boucherie 1 - They were a very athletic team who play route 1

SD 0 SMU 0 - They had one fantastic player who we shut down

SD 0 Belmont 0 - We were absolutely terrible this game

SD 2 Sahali 1 - Decent tilt

SD 2 Salmon Arm 0 - This game was played immediately after the Sahali game so everyone was tired. Overall, it was a great couple of days for the girls in Victoria. Well done, Devils!

Bettermirror, it is like anything. There are schools who have established programs who are always competitive.....ie Argyle, Charles Best, etc.....Overall, it certainly is competitive.

Back to league play today........

SD 5 North Delta 0 - Took about 20 minutes before we scored the first one after not looking threatening at all. We managed to score two more before the half as they continued to play an offside trap without much success. Nice to see five different girls score and 4 of the girls score their first goals of the season. Well done, Devils.

We play Tamanawis on Wednesday and that will be a very tough game.

Well...we managed to defeat Notre Dame in pk's after full time and 15 mins of overtime solved nothing. Pk's were not well taken by either team as we won 2-1. As it turns out,St. Thomas More defeated Carney 2-1 in the final. So..in the end we were happy in making school history at Holy Cross as the girls have never finished in the medals. Have to wonder about the tourney though as we were told the groups (2) were based on last years standings...and if so why the first, third, fourth and fifth place teams were in the same group?? Hmmmm...Carney runs the tourney and finished second last year...hmmmm. Anyway...on to league play.

Cheers!

They base it on last years BC Catholic tournament standings which ended up:
STM
Carney
LFA
HC
ND....okay,I goofed
our group this year was STM,LFA,HC,ST.Ann's,SJB....so 3 of the top 5.
Anyways....we managed to stink up our own park yesterday as we only tied Sullivan Heights (new to league). Our home turf (the football field) did us no favours as the girls have become used to playing on astro turf and control problems were abound. Played right down tothe level of the other team putting us in trouble of not making the Fraser Valleys....yikes! Hopefully we can rebound against Mountain. Good luck in your games Capt.

Cheers!

SD 4 Tamanawis 0

A very average first half as we went into the break up 1 - 0. We didn't give up any chances which was only real positive from the first half. The second half was much better and the girls stepped up the tempo and scored several quick goals. Tamanawis was missing their two best players........which helped us but we'll take it and move on to Seaquam. ......................
