Cavalry FC and HFX Wanderers FC played out the first scoreless draw of the 2021 CPL season Saturday. The Cavs entered play on the heels of back-to-back victories – last of which a swashbuckling 4-1 win against Atlético Ottawa. Tommy Wheeldon Jr’s rotated squad – starting with Tyson Farago in goal – failed to generate a solid goalscoring opportunity despite shining performances from Richard Luca and Anthony Novak. Halifax, meanwhile, entered Saturday’s match with a new-look attack with three returnees from the Island Games; Akeem Garcia, Joao Morelli, and Alex Marshall. Despite a few positive moments from them and specifically wingback Morey Doner, the Wanderers failed to score for the third match of three. Teams played in extreme heat at IG Field even after kickoff was moved to the evening due to the forecast. Here are the sights and sounds from Saturday’s matchup.
