York United fought back twice from behind, and scored a late winner, to beat HFX Wanderers 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Wanderers Grounds. After an opening 20 minutes that was end-to-end, but failed to provide a scoring chance that really tested one of the goalkeepers, HFX Wanderers would take the lead. After a high cross into the box from Wanderers captain Andre Rampersad, Jake Ruby dived and headed the ball toward the York goal. A big deflection off Wanderers attacker Stefan Karajovanovic saw the ball change direction, and bounce into Niko Giantsopoulos' net. After knocking on the door through the Wanderers' first nine games, but unable to find an elusive first CPL goal, Karajovanovic was credited with the opener in match number 10. Max Ferrari, one of York's breakout stars this season, equalized in the 39th minute. After a cross into the box wasn't met by anyone in the air, Ferrari picked it up and fired a rocket of a shot under the crossbar to make it 1-1. HFX responded instantly, just one minute and 22 seconds after Ferrari's strike, as Joao Morelli again scored at Wanderers Grounds. After a pair of goals last time out, Morelli would restore the lead for Halifax, receiving a cross from Ruby and hitting a low shot with his second touch. After an exciting end to the first half, it would be 2-1 to the home team going into the break. Karajovanovic nearly scored his second of the match just three minutes into the second half, getting on the end of a perfect low cross from Cory Bent and taking a shot right at Giantsopoulos, but the York goalkeeper got a strong hand to it to keep it out. The Wanderers attacker may have wanted that one back, as Isaiah Johnston equalized for York in the 54th minute. After taking a touch at the edge of the penalty area, Johnston fired a low shot into the bottom left corner of Christian Oxner's net, bringing the two teams even again. Morelli nearly took the lead back in the 70th minute, firing a long shot toward the York goal that beat Giantsopoulos, but crashed off the outside of the post. In the 90th minute, five minutes after coming off the bench, Lowell Wright was the hero for York United, turning and firing a shot into the net after a brilliant team play. After playing several passes to build up from the back, York eventually got the ball to Diyaeddine Abzi, who ran it up the left flank. He was tackled but hopped back onto his feet to collect the ball and play a low cross into 17-year-old Wright, who turned a put the ball into the back of the net. Oxner got a touch to the ball but couldn't keep it out. Peter Schaale had a chance to make it 3-3 with the last kick of the game, but his shot after the ball fell to him the box was fired over the cross bar.
