Late goals from substitutes Ramón Soria and Jeannot Esua saw FC Edmonton to pick up their first win of the season on Thursday night, beating Forge FC 2-0. Both sides had key players make their first starts of the season -- Elimane Cisse and Chris Nanco returned to the Forge XI as their only changes from Sunday, replacing Paolo Sabak and David Choinière, respectively. FC Edmonton, meanwhile, made six changes from their previous game -- bringing in Allan Zebie, Mélé Temguia, Easton Ongaro, Kyle Porter, Roberto Avila, and Marcus Velado-Tsegaye. Velado-Tsegaye had the game's first scoring opportunity in the 8th minute, getting his head on the end of a cross from the left flank, but the Edmonton native headed it wide of the goal. The Eddies thought they deserved a penalty in the 35th minute, as a shot from Shamit Shome struck Dejan Jakovic's arm, but the referee decided not to call it. Jakovic was turning his back to block to shot, so the referee judged his arms to be in a natural position, and shouts for a penalty were waved away. Apart from the early header by Velado-Tsegaye, neither side came particularly close to finding the back of the net in the first half. Forge managed just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, a Daniel Krutzen header that was blocked by Easton Ongaro. Edmonton managed six, but just one on target. The second half was just as frustrating for both sides, as neither could create a big scoring chance for most of the half. They traded shots on target midway through the second half, but they weren't enough to challenge Forge goalkeeper Triston Henry or his FC Edmonton counterpart Connor James. Cisse came closest for Forge in the 85th minute, curling a shot toward the bottom right corner of the goal, but it bounced inches wide of the post, a missed chance that Forge would come to regret. Minutes later, FC Edmonton substitute Ramón Soria gave his team the lead with a rocket of a left-footed shot -- Soria hit a powerful volley into the back of the net. Jeannot Esua doubled the lead with the final kick of the game a few minutes later -- an audacious strike from distance that sailed over the head of Triston Henry. The Eddies improve to 1-0-1 with the victory, while Forge FC fall to 0-0-2, their worst start to a season thus far.
