HFX Wanderers FC continued to build out its roster on Wednesday, announcing the singing of young Canadian forward Samuel Salter for the 2021 CPL season, with club options for both 2022 and 2023. The 20-year-old Montreal native is headed to Halifax from the NCAA, where he was previously playing for California State University, Northridge in Division I. He appeared in 16 games for the school in 2019 as a freshman, scoring three goals and adding two assists. Prior to his move to CSUN, Salter played in the CF Montreal (then-Montreal Impact) academy in his hometown, before playing the 2018 PLSQ season with CS St-Hubert. Salter previously trialed with several clubs around Europe before opting for university soccer in the United States, but he has now signed his first professional deal with the Wanderers. "We're delighted to bring a young player of Sam's quality to our squad to add further competition in attack. Having viewed his games in PLSQ league and in discussion with our scouting network, we’ve identified a player widely considered to be one of the best attackers coming out of Quebec. His versatility to play up front or out wide is exactly what (coach Stephen Hart) looks for in a player," said Matt Fegan, the Wanderers' VP of Football Operations. "Having considered invitations for trials from several European clubs, the fact that Sam has opted to launch his professional career with us at Wanderers is further testament to the opportunities we're creating for Canadian talent."

The young attacker indicated that an opportunity to play pro soccer closer to home was one of the most compelling factors in his choice to sign with HFX. "Who would have thought four or five years ago that I’d be signing my first professional contract in my home country in front of family," said Salter. "I have family in New Brunswick who aren’t too far away. It means a lot to me to finally have this chance and to be playing at home. I haven’t had the chance to play at home for the last two years so I’m just thankful. Salter is the 17th player signed by HFX for 2021, and the fifth newcomer alongside Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé, Pierre Lamothe, Kieran Baskett, and former York United fullback Morey Doner.
