HFX Wanderers FC attacker João Morelli has been named CanPL.ca’s Player of the Month for September. The 26-year-old is the CPL’s golden boot leader on 14 goals – seven of which came in the month of September thanks to two braces against Atlético Ottawa, another against York United, and the only goal in a 1-0 win over FC Edmonton. Morelli broke the CPL’s seasonal goalscoring record in September too, besting Forge FC’s Tristan Borges’ first-year tally of 13 markers.

The Brazilian is on his second season with Halifax, having recorded two goals and two assists from last Summer’s Island Games. A versatile attacker, Morelli can play across the front four but is most comfortable playing behind a striker, something he revealed on Beyond The Pitch with Kristian Jack. Morelli joins Cavalry FC wide player Mo Farsi (August) and Pacific FC attacker Marco Bustos (July) as the previous player of the month honourees.
