Forge FC added some goalkeeping depth on Monday, announcing that they have signed veteran Canadian shot-stopper David Monsalve for the 2020 Canadian Premier League campaign. Monsalve joins Forge after spending the two previous seasons with the Ottawa Fury in the USL Championship. He is expected to compete with Triston Henry for Forge's starting goalkeeper job. A 31-year-old native of North York, Ont., Monsalve had been without a club since the Fury ceased operations last November. "When the champions from the year before you call you, you take that call seriously," Monsalve told CanPL.ca. "I was excited. Everything worked out, and I am excited to be with Forge... I thought it was a good situation for myself and I think I can bring a lot of value to the club." After his TFC tenure was over, Monsalve played in the Canadian Soccer League with the North York Astros. From there, Monsalve travelled abroad, with playing stints in Finland (Inter Turku, FC Sinimustat, AC Oulu), Sweden (Husqvarna FF), Colombia (América de Cali), and Guatemala (Club Deportivo Suchitepéquez). In between, he found time to come home and turned out for FC Edmonton (in the NASL), and played one game for Vaughan Azzurri during the 2017 League1 Ontario season. Monsalve has represented Canada’s senior national team, earning his lone cap in an international friendly vs. Jamaica on January 31, 2010. He was also a member of the Canadian team that competed at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup held on home soil, and the under-23 side at the 2008 Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament. Forge opens the 2020 CPL season at home versus Cavalry FC on April 11.
