Just like the Raptors, FC Edmonton had some star power in the building on Sunday. Canadian men's national team star Alphonso Davies, fresh off his first year with the Bundesliga's Bayern Munich, was on hand to watch the Eddies fall 1-0 to Valour FC at Clarke Field. Davies, who himself calls Edmonton home, came out to support a few fellow teenagers in Jeff Paulus' lineup. He told Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun that he was there to watch three Edmonton locals – David Doe (18), Marcus Velado-Tsegaye (17), and Prince Amanda (18). Doe made his first start for the Eddies on Sunday, and Davies was keen to make sure he was around to see his friend play. Doe, who played 54 minutes before Velado-Tsegaye came in to replace him, was excited to hear Davies had come to watch. "He's my close friend," Doe said of Davies. "He's almost family." Although he was halfway around the world in Germany for the beginning of the Canadian Premier League's inaugural season, Davies has kept tabs on the first few months. "I've even watched a couple of games despite the time difference," Davies told the Sun. "The league is good. There are some top quality young Canadians playing in it. They should develop into being some very good players." Himself a major success story of youth soccer development in Canada, Davies is hopeful that the CPL can help augment the Canadian men's national team outfit around him. With the CONCACAF Gold Cup kicking off later this month, Davies returned to Edmonton for a quick visit before he joins the rest of John Herdman's squad in camp. They'll begin their tournament on June 15 against Martinique.
