Major League Soccer side CF Montréal announced a new contract for former Cavalry FC defender Joel Waterman on Thursday. The two-year contract is for 2023 and 2024, with an option for 2025. “We are very happy to reward Joel with this new contract,” said CF Montréal Vice-President and Chief Sporting Officer Olivier Renard in a media release. “Since his arrival with us, he has done nothing but progress. We hope this new deal will help him reach further milestones in his development.” Waterman enjoyed a career year last year with Montréal, making 30 starts and scoring three goals and four assists during the 2022 MLS regular season. He also started both of the club's playoff matches last year. As a result of those performances, he was named to Canada's World Cup roster for Qatar 2022, after earning his first two international caps against Bahrain and Japan in November in pre-tournament matches. “I’m really excited to be signing a new deal with the club who believed in me from the beginning. I have enjoyed the last three years here and will continue to do so,” said Waterman. “As for my role, it’s the same as what I set out coming into the league and that is to improve every day, both personally and with the team. Thank you to the club, the city and most importantly the fans for embracing me. I’m excited for the future.” Before joining Montréal, Waterman played for Cavalry FC during the inaugural CPL season, helping them to a regular season title. He also helped them to become the first CPL side to defeat an MLS team, when they beat the Vancouver Whitecaps over two legs in the 2019 Canadian Championship. Waterman appeared in the 2019 CPL final, where he was sent off in the first leg.
