While goal scorers such as Tristan Borges garnered headlines during the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season, we shouldn’t overlook the contributions of the league’s top playmakers Sure, Borges scored a league-high 13 goals in 2019, and swept the major honours at the CPL's year-end awards ceremony. But spare a thought for the league’s top ‘assist men,’ the playmakers who pull the strings in midfield and often create countless scoring chances for CPL’s top forwards. Last season, Borges, Michael Petrasso, Kyle Bekker and Ben Fisk were among six players who finished with a league-leading five assists. Others such as Sergio Camargo and Jose Escalante racked up a few assists in helping Calvary win both the Spring and Fall season titles. Petrasso (York9 FC) and Fisk (Atlético Ottawa) made off-season moves this winter, so it’ll be interesting to see how they fit into their new surroundings, and whether or not they’ll be able to tally assists at the same rate as they did last year. Bekker and Camargo remain with Forge FC and Cavalry, and should be key players for their clubs again this year, should there be a 2020 CPL season. All of which raises the question: Who will be the CPL's standout 'assist man' of 2020? Have your say by clicking on the Twitter post below and voting in the CanPL.ca poll.
